Description
Mount Kipipiri is an isolated (now dormant) volcano rising to 3,349 m in the Wanjohi Valley on the Kinangop Plateau, immediately beside the Aberdare Range in central Kenya. Its name means "butterfly" in the Gikuyu language, a reference to the mountain's profile seen from a distance. The summit lies about 32 km northeast of Lake Naivasha, which is visible from the top. The area is protected as the Mount Kipipiri Forest Reserve — part of Aberdare National Park — and shelters colobus and Sykes monkeys, elephants, buffalo and abundant birdlife. Among Kenya's hiking community, Kipipiri is a popular day hike through dense, often-misty montane forest, widely used as fitness and acclimatisation training before attempting Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro.
Routes
Puncak Kipipiri dari kantor KWS/Geta (day hike pergi-pulang)
Berat — tanjakan hutan panjang, medan berbatu, dingin & berkabutA day-hike route from the KWS office along a dirt road into the forest, alternating shaded woodland and open sections, dropping into a valley then climbing rocky ground to the summit (~3,370 m). Not for beginners; a KWS permit is required and a guide is recommended. Often used as fitness and acclimatisation training before Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro.

Menengah — tanjakan hutan panjang hingga ±3.349 m, cuaca dingin & berkabutJalur day hike utama Mount Kipipiri, naik dari sisi Lembah Wanjohi/Cagar Hutan menembus hutan pegunungan lebat menuju puncak (±3.349 m).
SedangA one-way traverse from Geta Forest Station (southeast side, ~2,500 m), climbing gently on plantation-forest tractor tracks, then game paths across open moorland and streams, indigenous forest, wildflower meadows and tussock bog up to the summit (~3,345 m), before a steep descent to Miharati (~2,430 m) on the northwest side. A KFS permit is required; rain gear and warm clothing are advised as the mountain is frequently misty.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Recorded hiking on Mount Kipipiri is dominated by day hikes from Kenya's hiking community. The trail climbs through dense, frequently misty montane forest to the summit (~3,349 m), with a long round trip of roughly 16 km, so many groups use it as fitness and acclimatisation training before Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro. The clips below show forest-trail conditions, panoramas of the Wanjohi Valley and Kinangop Plateau, and guided group outings.
