Description

Mount Kenya (5,199 m) is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro, an extinct stratovolcano once far taller that glaciers have eroded into sharp core peaks. Its three main summits are Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m), which require technical alpine climbing, and Point Lenana (4,985 m), reachable by non-technical trekkers and by far the most popular summit goal. The area is protected as Mount Kenya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with distinctive tropical-highland vegetation—forest, moorland, and giant Afro-alpine plants such as lobelias and senecios. The three main trekking routes to Point Lenana are Sirimon, Chogoria, and Naro Moru, usually done over 4–5 days with a pre-dawn summit from Shipton's Camp or the Austrian Hut. To the Kikuyu people the mountain is sacred and known as Kirinyaga, believed to be the dwelling of Ngai.

Routes

Jalur Chogoria (menuju Point Lenana)

Sedang (non-teknis)
5 hari

Jalur Naro Moru (menuju Point Lenana)

Sedang (non-teknis)
3–4 hari

Jalur Sirimon (menuju Point Lenana)

Sedang (non-teknis)
4–5 hari

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mount Kenya to Point Lenana (4,985 m) usually takes 4–5 days via the Sirimon, Chogoria, or Naro Moru routes, with a pre-dawn summit from Shipton's Camp or the Austrian Hut. Trip reports stress acclimatisation, the cold pre-dawn summit push, the beauty of the moorland and alpine tarns (especially the Chogoria route), and the technical Batian/Nelion peaks that demand climbing skills. Giant Afro-alpine plants and sunrise above the clouds are the main draws.
