Description

Mount Kaukau (445 m) is a large hill in the northern suburbs of Wellington, New Zealand, near Johnsonville, Khandallah and Ngaio. Though not tall, it is the most visible high point in the city's skyline — made even more prominent by Wellington's 122 m main television transmitter mast standing near the summit. The top opens up views of the city, the harbour and the Remutaka and Tararua Ranges; on a clear day even Tapuae-o-Uenuku and the Kaikōura Ranges in the South Island appear in the distance. The most direct route starts at Simla Crescent in Khandallah — about 1.5 km each way, reachable in roughly 30 minutes — while a longer loop through Khandallah Park and the Skyline Walkway runs about 4 km in around 3 hours. The track also forms part of the 16 km Northern Walkway that stretches from Johnsonville to the top of the Cable Car in the Botanic Gardens. Because the summit is exposed and Wellington is famously windy, a clear, calm day gives the best experience.

Routes

Loop Khandallah Park (via Skyline Walkway)

Menengah (loop lebih panjang, punggungan terbuka)
±3 jam (loop ~4 km)

A circuit that climbs to the summit then descends via the Skyline Walkway toward Sirsi Terrace and through Khandallah Park, about 4 km in around 3 hours. The exposed ridge track gives wide views but is wind-exposed; it can be extended toward Makara Saddle for a longer outing.
