Description
Karisimbi (4,507 m) is the highest peak in the Virunga Mountains and the highest mountain in Rwanda, on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo inside Volcanoes National Park. Its name derives from the Kinyarwanda "amasimbi", referring to a summit often capped by white cloud or frost. A dormant stratovolcano, Karisimbi is usually climbed as a two-day trek: day one ascends through bamboo and montane forest from the base of Mount Bisoke—passing the area of gorilla researcher Dian Fossey's tomb—then camps near 3,700 m; day two climbs about four hours to the summit. On a clear day the top reveals the line of Virunga peaks, including Bisoke, Mikeno and the active Nyiragongo volcano in Congo. The trek needs no technical skills but demands strong fitness due to altitude, steep slopes and cold, wet weather.

Climbing Experiences
Karisimbi, Rwanda's highest mountain (4,507 m), is usually climbed as a two-day trek from Volcanoes National Park. Day one pushes through often muddy, wet bamboo and montane forest, then camps near 3,700 m in biting cold; day two climbs about four hours to a summit that is frequently misty or frosted. Hikers describe thick mud, rain, cold nights at camp and the strain of altitude, but also panoramas of the Virunga peaks—Bisoke, Mikeno and Nyiragongo—on clear days. A guide with an RDB permit is mandatory.
