Description
Mount Karioi (756 m), known by its Māori name "Karioi", is an ancient extinct stratovolcano about 2.4 million years old, standing some 8 km south-west of the surf town of Raglan in New Zealand's Waikato region, on the North Island. Its bush-clad summit overlooks the mouth of Raglan (Whāingaroa) Harbour and the Tasman Sea, making it the most iconic landmark on the Waikato west coast. Two million years ago it was probably an ash cone at least 100 m higher than today; its body now consists largely of basalt with andesite dikes that form its ridges. Though not high, climbing Karioi is famously demanding: the ascent is very steep through coastal forest (kohekohe, māhoe, rewarewa, kamahi and a variety of ferns), with several near-vertical rock faces fitted with chains, ropes and ladders to aid scrambling. The reward is a 360-degree panorama from the concrete helipad at the top — on a clear day hikers can see as far south as Mount Taranaki, the Herangi Range and Pureora. Two main routes reach the summit — the Karioi Track from Te Toto Gorge (steeper and more scenic) and the shorter Wairake Track from the Ruapuke side — allowing either a return trip on one side or a full crossing over the mountain.

Routes
Karioi Crossing (Whaanga Road → Karioi Road)
Berat — menggabungkan bagian tersteep dari kedua jalur, perlu pengaturan kendaraan di dua ujungA full crossing over the mountain, ascending one side (e.g. the Karioi Track/Whaanga Road) and descending the other (Wairake Track/Karioi Road), or vice versa. It requires a car shuttle between the two trailheads. It offers a more complete mountain experience but demands more fitness and planning.

Sedang–berat — curam, medan tidak rata, ada bagian scrambling dengan rantai/tali/tanggaThe steeper but most scenic summit route, starting from the Te Toto Gorge car park at the end of Whaanga Road (about a 25-minute drive from Raglan town). After a stile at the start it is almost all uphill through coastal forest, with several vantage points over the Tasman Sea. Near the top are several near-vertical rock faces fitted with chains, ropes and ladders. The summit is marked by a concrete helipad with a 360-degree panorama — on a clear day as far as Mount Taranaki.

Menantang — lebih pendek dan tidak securam Karioi Track, tetap menanjak mantapThe shortest route to the 756 m Karioi summit, reached from the end of Karioi Road via Te Mata Road and Ruapuke Road off SH23. It begins with a ~40-minute walk across private farmland to the bush edge (daylight access only — respect the access privilege), then climbs steadily through coastal forest of kohekohe, māhoe, rewarewa, kamahi and ferns to the top. Water is hard to find, especially in summer, so carry enough drinking water.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on Mount Karioi centre on its short but very steep, characterful track — relentless climbing through coastal forest, rock sections with chains, ropes and ladders, and the reward of sweeping views over the Tasman Sea, Raglan Harbour and, on a clear day, Mount Taranaki. Vlogs and trip reports describe a 6–7 hour return outing, early 'why am I doing this?' moments, the fun of using chains to scramble up and rappel back down, and the importance of good footwear, an early start and carrying enough water since the route is almost waterless. Some creators also document a full crossing over the mountain from Whaanga Road to Karioi Road.
