Description
Mount Kaputar is the high point of the Nandewar Range, rising to about 1,508 metres and standing boldly above the plains near Narrabri in northern New South Wales. The mountain is the remnant of an ancient shield volcano — Nandewar — long extinct and eroded over millions of years, leaving a dramatic volcanic landscape of lava plugs, cliffs and rock formations such as the organ-pipe basalt columns of Sawn Rocks. The area is protected within Mount Kaputar National Park. Unlike many peaks, Kaputar's summit is relatively easy to reach: visitors drive the winding Kaputar Road up from Narrabri to the Dawsons Spring area, then take a short walk (about 2 km, grade 3) to the summit lookout, which offers 360-degree panoramas said to take in roughly a tenth of New South Wales on a clear day. Beyond the summit walk, the park is rich in other trails such as Sawn Rocks, Yulludunida Crater and Mount Coryah. Because of its altitude, Kaputar feels far cooler than the plains below and occasionally receives a light dusting of snow in winter, so visitors should carry warm layers.

Routes
Jalur plateau lain (Yulludunida, Mount Coryah, Eckford)
Sedang (bervariasi; beberapa jalur menuntut naik-turun dan navigasi)Beyond the summit walk, the Kaputar plateau offers a range of trails such as the climb to the Yulludunida crater (about 4 km, roughly 3 hours), Mount Coryah, and Eckford — leading hikers through volcanic landscapes, lava plugs and montane forest with sweeping views. Ideal for those wanting to explore further than the summit lookout.

Grade 3 (sedang, jalur pendek dengan beberapa tanjakan)The short, popular walk to Mount Kaputar's high point (about 1,508 m), starting near the Dawsons Spring area after driving up Kaputar Road. Over roughly 2 km return, the track climbs to the summit lookout with 360-degree panoramas said to take in about a tenth of New South Wales on a clear day. Suitable for most reasonably fit visitors, though the top is exposed and windy.
SourceSawn Rocks Walking Track
Mudah (jalur landai dan terkelola)An easy, gentle walk to Sawn Rocks — a huge cliff of organ-pipe basalt columns, one of Australia's finest volcanic 'organ pipe' examples. In the northern section of Mount Kaputar National Park, this roughly 1.5 km return track follows a forested creek to the base of the dramatic hexagonal columns.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Visitors' accounts of Mount Kaputar National Park blend the short climb to the summit lookout with exploring the park's distinctive volcanic trails. Recurring themes: the winding drive up to Dawsons Spring, the sweeping panorama from the top, and the geological wonder of Sawn Rocks with its organ-pipe basalt columns. Some creators highlight camping in the park and wildlife encounters, while hiking guides detail the distances and grades of the plateau's many walks. All sources below are verified live.
