Description
Mount Kaimon (開聞岳, Kaimondake, 924 m) is a near-perfectly conical stratovolcano at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu, nicknamed 'Satsuma Fuji' for its graceful symmetry. Though modest in height, its trail is distinctive: hikers start almost at sea level and follow a spiral path that winds clockwise around the cone to the summit, so the panorama rotates across the Pacific, Kagoshima Bay and, on clear days, Yakushima Island and the Sakurajima volcano. Kaimon is one of Kyūya Fukada's 100 Famous Japanese Mountains (Hyakumeizan) and lies within Kirishima-Kinkōwan National Park. An active volcano whose last recorded eruption was in the late 9th century, its smooth cone is one of the signature landmarks of southern Kyushu.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on Mount Kaimon almost always highlight the feeling of starting near sea level and following the spiral path that winds around the cone to the 924 m summit. Japanese-language vlogs show the 合目 station markers, the rocky and rope-assisted sections near the top, and the panorama rotating over Kagoshima Bay, Sakurajima and, on clear days, Yakushima Island. English-language guides add concrete trail figures (~6.5 km return, ~730 m of gain, a red torii gate and shrine at the top). The mountain is often called 'Satsuma Fuji' and is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
