Description
Mount Kahuzi (3,308 m) is an extinct volcano and the highest peak of the Mitumba Range along the western shore of Lake Kivu in the Albertine Rift, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Together with the neighbouring Mount Biéga (2,790 m) it gives its name to Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site best known for its eastern lowland gorillas. The climb to the summit is not especially demanding: typically about 4 hours up and 3 hours down, starting from the Tshivanga Visitor Centre (~2,100 m) and passing through dense tropical rainforest, a bamboo belt, and a sub-alpine zone. From the top, hikers can look out over Lake Kivu, the city of Bukavu, Mount Biéga, and—on clear days—the borders of Rwanda and Burundi. The area is managed by the ICCN and hikes must be accompanied by guides/rangers. Its appeal is the combination of wildlife-rich montane rainforest with sweeping views over the region's great volcanic lake.
Routes
Jalur Bugulumiza (titik pandang, non-puncak)
Mudah–menengah (jalur pendek panorama)A short ~6 km trail (~3 hours round trip) from near the Tshivanga Visitor Centre to the Bugulumiza viewpoint at about 2,400 m. It does not reach the summit, but offers panoramas of Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biéga and the park's tropical rainforest—a popular option for a lighter walk with wide views over the area.

Climbing Experiences
Most available accounts of climbing Mount Kahuzi come from guide and local-operator descriptions of the trek in Kahuzi-Biéga National Park. The pattern is consistent: the hike begins at the Tshivanga Visitor Centre (~2,100 m) with a ranger briefing, then follows the Tshibati trail through dense rainforest, a bamboo belt, and a sub-alpine zone—roughly 4 hours up and 3 hours down. Along the lower trail, hikers frequently see primates such as black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, and owl-faced monkeys, plus signs of forest elephants and buffalo. From the summit, reports describe views of Lake Kivu, the city of Bukavu, Mount Biéga, and, on clear days, the Rwanda/Burundi borders. The best time is the dry season (June–September, December–February) when trails are less slippery.
