Description

Mount Iwaki is a roughly 1,625 m stratovolcano in Aomori, Japan, also known as Tsugaru Fuji. The Hyakuzawa trail begins at Iwakiyama Shrine; the tourism association lists about five hours for the ascent alone. Skyline access to the eighth station offers a shorter climb, but reaching the summit still involves walking over rocky terrain. A Hiking in Japan trip account describes the approach from the upper car park to the ridge. As checked on 14 September 2026, the official source lists the Yayoi trail as closed because of bear sightings; check trail updates before departure.

Routes

Dake Onsen (嶽温泉)

Jalur umum; puncak berbatu / general hiking trail; rocky upper section
±4 jam naik / about 4 hours ascent

Start at the torii near the shared Dake Onsen car park. The official source lists four hours for ascent alone and warns of rockfall above Hōmei Hut.

Hyakuzawa (百沢) dari Kuil Iwakiyama

Menengah–berat / intermediate–advanced
±5 jam naik / about 5 hours ascent

Enter from the left side of Iwakiyama Shrine. The tourism association describes this as an intermediate-to-advanced trail and warns of rockfall at Omisaka. Five hours is an ascent estimate, not a round-trip duration.

Stasiun ke-8 Skyline ke puncak / Skyline eighth station to summit

Jalur pendek berbatu / short rocky climb
±70 menit naik tanpa lift / about 70 minutes ascent without chairlift

From the eighth-station car park, the walking trail left of the chairlift reaches the ridge in roughly 40 minutes, then passes an emergency hut toward the summit in another 30 minutes in the Hiking in Japan account. These times exclude descent and stops; boulder scrambling is still required.

Climbing Experiences

Five hiking videos cover Hyakuzawa, descent via Dake, and Skyline access with a chairlift. Hiking in Japan adds a written account of the route from the upper car park to the ridge. These videos and trip accounts document experiences rather than confirming that every trail is currently open.
