Description

Mount Iron is a rocky hill of approximately 548 metres near Wānaka in Otago, New Zealand. Glaciers shaped the hill, which rises nearly 250 metres above the surrounding countryside. Its summit overlooks Lake Wānaka, the Pisa Range, the Upper Clutha Basin and the Southern Alps. The classic loop is about 4.5 km, climbing the western slope through kānuka before descending the eastern side; some sections are steep and rocky. Visitors should check for wildfire closures and watch for winter ice.

Climb the main approach to the summit and retrace your ascent. Red White Adventures describes this as shorter than completing the loop, with lake views on the descent. No separate duration is specified because the source does not isolate the timing of this variant.
