Description

Mount Ibuki (伊吹山, 1,377 m) is the dominant peak on the border of Shiga and Gifu Prefectures and the highest point of Shiga Prefecture, rising near Lake Biwa. Standing almost in isolation, it is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains (Nihon Hyakumeizan) and has long been prized for the rich alpine wildflower meadows on its limestone upper slopes. The traditional trail from the Shiga side climbs through ten 'gōme' (stages) to a broad summit with sweeping views over Lake Biwa and the Japanese Alps, while the Ibukiyama Driveway toll road lets visitors reach an area near the top for a short final walk. Steeped in legend — associated with the hero Yamato Takeru — Ibuki is also famous for extreme snowfall, holding the world record for the greatest measured snow depth, set in 1927.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Mount Ibuki highlight the traditional trail from the Shiga side that climbs through ten stages (gōme) across open slopes to a summit overlooking Lake Biwa, plus the shorter option via the Ibukiyama Driveway. Vlogs show summer alpine wildflower meadows, steep sun-exposed switchbacks, and sweeping summit views. Both Japanese- and English-language sources stress Ibuki as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains achievable as a day hike.
