Description

Mount Hutt, or Ōpuke, stands on the western edge of the Canterbury Plains on New Zealand’s South Island. Wikidata Q692322 classifies it as a mountain and ski area and records 2,086 m; the operator also places the top of the Summit Six lift at 2,086 m. This should be distinguished from the main summit, reported at roughly 2,186–2,190 m in PeakVisor and Wikipedia. Forest tracks at Awa Awa Rata Reserve offer shorter walks, while reaching the main summit is a separate undertaking. DOC states that the ski road gate at Scotts Saddle is locked in summer, so vehicle access to the ski field cannot be assumed. Beyond the resort boundary, patrol does not provide avalanche control.

Opuke Track — Awa Awa Rata Reserve

This track connects Ridge Track with the end of the gravel road in Awa Awa Rata Reserve. It is a forest approach at Mt Hutt’s base, not a main-summit route.

Ridge Track — Mount Hutt Forest (bukan puncak utama)

2.20 km 45 menit satu arah / 45 minutes one way

The track follows the ridge above Pudding Hill Stream and links Alder, Opuke and Scotts Saddle tracks, with access from Awa Awa Rata Reserve. This is a forest walk, not a Mt Hutt summit ascent.

From Awa Awa Rata Reserve, the author followed part of Scotts Saddle Track, turned onto Ridge Track and descended Ōpuke Track. The high point was about 780 m. His timing excludes an initial wrong turn and does not describe reaching Mt Hutt’s summit.
