Description

Mount Howitt (1,742 m; Toot-buck-nulluck in the Gunai language) is a mountain in the Victorian Alps, Victoria, Australia, in the Wonnangatta-Moroka Unit of the Alpine National Park about 170 km north-east of Melbourne, named after the explorer-naturalist Alfred William Howitt. Its summit acts as a hub for high-country routes and the access point to the Crosscut Saw — a narrow, serrated ridge that in profile resembles a saw blade, its many jagged 'teeth' of steep ups and downs linking to Mount Buggery and Mount Speculation, often called the most spectacular ridgeline in the Victorian high country. From the car park at the end of Howitt Road, a relatively gentle track crosses snow-gum plains past Macalister Springs and the Vallejo Gantner Hut before climbing to the summit. Continuing onto the Crosscut Saw raises the grade to 4, with rocky scrambles and steep drops on both sides. The Australian Alps Walking Track (AAWT) also crosses the Howitt area.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of Mount Howitt are almost always tied to the Crosscut Saw: from the Howitt Road car park, a gentle track crosses snow-gum plains to Macalister Springs and the Vallejo Gantner Hut, then climbs to the summit, before some continue along the serrated ridge to Mount Buggery and Mount Speculation. Reports emphasise the narrow, exposed ridge with sharp ups and downs, rocky scrambles, 360-degree Victorian high-country views, and trips done either as a long day or overnight. The ridge demands a head for heights and care with fast-changing weather.
