Description
Mount Hombori (Hombori Tondo) is the highest point in Mali, a sandstone inselberg of about 1,155 m rising from the Sahel plains of the Mopti Region near the town of Hombori. It has the classic form of a table mountain (mesa) with sheer cliffs, and together with the rock towers around it — especially the Main de Fatima (Fatima's Hand) — the area is one of West Africa's most renowned rock-climbing destinations. The plateau summit of Hombori Tondo can be reached by a 'voie normale' (normal route) involving a scrambling climb, while its vertical walls draw climbers and even base jumpers. Because it is remote and security conditions in Mali's Sahel are often unstable, a visit demands careful planning, a local guide, and up-to-date safety checks.

MenantangThe normal route to the plateau summit of Hombori Tondo (~1,155 m), Mali's highest point. Not a mere footpath: the upper section requires scrambling over sandstone to reach the summit plateau. Remote, Sahel heat, and requires checking security conditions and using a local guide.
