Information

Elevation
1.470 m
Country
Selandia Baru (NZ)
Location / Range
Pegunungan Tararua (Tararua Range), Taman Hutan Tararua (Tararua Forest Park), Wairarapa/Wellington, Pulau Utara
Mountain type
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
-40.8734, 175.4147
Difficulty

Description

Mount Holdsworth (1,470 m) is one of the most popular and accessible peaks in the Tararua Range on New Zealand's North Island, and the main eastern gateway into Tararua Forest Park from the Holdsworth Road end near Masterton in the Wairarapa. Like the whole Tararua Range it is not a volcano but is built of hard, tectonically uplifted greywacke, with an open, trig-marked summit on the 'tops' above the bushline. Its appeal is the mix of easy access and expansive views: a bush track climbs steadily to Powell Hut at about 1,200 m — a popular DOC hut rebuilt in 2019 — then a final hour along the open ridge to the summit. Many walkers do it as a long day trip (about 6 hours to the top with a tramping pack) or stay overnight at Powell Hut, while the classic Holdsworth–Jumbo Circuit links the peak with Jumbo Hut in a 2–3 day loop across the tops. The Tararua's famous exposure to wind and fast-changing weather makes the mountain both a valuable tramping apprenticeship and a reminder of the need for good preparation.

Routes

The most direct line to the summit: from the Holdsworth Road end near Masterton, a bush track climbs steadily past Rocky Lookout and Mountain House Shelter to Powell Hut at about 1,200 m (roughly 5 hours with a tramping pack). From the hut a final hour or so along the open tops leads to the trig-marked summit at 1,470 m. Many do it as a day trip, but an overnight at Powell Hut allows a sunrise over the Wairarapa.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Mount Holdsworth cluster around two forms: a day or overnight trip to Powell Hut and the summit, and the popular 2–3 day Holdsworth–Jumbo Circuit loop. Trampers repeatedly highlight the steady bush climb to Powell Hut, the moment of breaking out of the treeline onto the open tops with wide views, and Tararua weather that can turn from clear to fog and wind within minutes. The Jumbo loop adds an above-bushline ridge traverse between Powell Hut and Jumbo Hut that is both the most memorable and the most exposed section. Common themes: easy access from the Wairarapa, comfortable DOC huts, and lessons in respecting mountain weather.
