Description

Mount Hobson (Māori: Hirakimatā; 627 m) is the highest point of Great Barrier Island (Aotea) in the Hauraki Gulf, about 100 km northeast of Auckland, New Zealand. Geologically it is the caldera of a complex rhyolite lava dome, part of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone active between 12 and 8 million years ago. Several tracks give relatively easy access to the summit: the shortest (about 2 hours) threads through the famous Windy Canyon, a wind-carved gorge of dramatic rock, before climbing a series of wooden stairs and boardwalks to the top. Views from the summit often stretch across the whole island to the Coromandel Peninsula and the Poor Knights Islands. The summit area is ecologically special: it is a breeding ground for the black petrel (tākoketai), so the track here is deliberately built from boardwalks and stairs to protect the nests and prevent erosion. Great Barrier is also a last stronghold for several plants now rare or gone on the mainland, such as Pittosporum kirkii and Kunzea sinclairii. The mix of volcanic geology, well-formed trails and endemic wildlife makes Hirakimatā a favourite tramp on this remote island.

Routes

Kaiaraara Track (dari Port FitzRoy) → Mount Hobson / Hirakimatā

Menengah: lebih panjang, menembus hutan & bekas jalur penebangan kauri; bertemu jalur puncak yang sama
Sehari penuh pulang-pergi (bagian dari Aotea Track multi-hari)

A longer route from the island's west side, starting near Port FitzRoy via the Kaiaraara Track. It passes through regenerating forest and traces of the historic kauri industry (such as old timber dams) before joining the stairs-and-boardwalk section to the Hirakimatā summit. It is usually done as part of the multi-day Aotea Track that crosses the island. It requires more fitness for the distance, rewarded with lush forest and the same summit panorama. Mind the biosecurity rules and changeable island weather.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Port FitzRoy / Kaiaraara → hutan & bekas bendungan kauri

    ⏱ 1,5–2,5 jam 150 mdpl

Hutan regenerasi dan jejak sejarah industri kauri di lembah Kaiaraara

  2. 2

    Pertemuan jalur → puncak Hirakimatā (627 m)

    ⏱ 1–1,5 jam 627 mdpl

Bergabung dengan jalur tangga & boardwalk pelindung sarang petrel menuju puncak

Windy Canyon → Mount Hobson / Hirakimatā (rute terpendek)

Menengah–mudah: jalur tertata dengan tangga & boardwalk; sebagian menanjak, terbuka terhadap angin
~2–3 jam sekali jalan ke puncak (pulang-pergi setengah hari)

The shortest and most popular route to the summit. From the Aotea Road car park, a short climb reaches Windy Canyon — a wind-carved gorge of dramatic rock with open views. From there the track follows a ridge then climbs a series of wooden stairs and boardwalks deliberately built to protect the black petrel breeding area and prevent erosion, up to the Hirakimatā summit (627 m). From the top, views often stretch across all of Great Barrier Island to the Coromandel Peninsula and the Poor Knights Islands. Relatively easy but requiring care with wind, mist and stairs slick when wet; footwear must be kept clean for biosecurity.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Aotea Road car park → Windy Canyon

    ⏱ 20–40 menit 300 mdpl

Tanjakan singkat ke ngarai berangin dengan formasi batu & pemandangan

  2. 2

    Windy Canyon → puncak Hirakimatā (627 m)

    ⏱ 1,5–2 jam 627 mdpl

Punggungan lalu tangga & boardwalk kayu pelindung sarang petrel hitam menuju puncak
