Description

Mount Hermon (Jabal ash-Shaykh, 2,814 m) is a snow-capped limestone massif at the southern end of the Anti-Lebanon range, straddling the Lebanon–Syria border; its southern slopes on the Golan Heights have been Israeli-controlled since the 1967 Six-Day War. The 2,814 m true summit lies in the Syria/Lebanon sector and is off-limits to visitors, while on the Israeli side the highest point reachable by visitors is Mitzpe Hashlagim (~2,236 m) and the Mount Hermon (Neve Ativ) ski resort, which tops out around 2,040 m — Israel's only ski resort. Israel's highest marked hiking trail climbs the southern ridge from about 1,400 m toward the resort's upper area over karst terrain, and requires IDF brigade approval because it crosses a military zone. The mountain has long been regarded as sacred in Semitic and biblical tradition, and Israelis call it 'the eyes of the nation' for its strategic early-warning role. The mix of snow, sweeping Golan–Hula Valley panoramas, and its status as a militarized border zone makes Hermon a singular destination: at once a ski-and-hiking area and a sensitive geopolitical point.

Routes

Jalur bertanda punggung selatan (Neve Ativ / resort ski → kawasan atas)

Menengah — tanjakan curam berkelanjutan di medan karst
Sekitar 2–4 jam naik (kira-kira 1 jam tanjakan curam dari area kereta gantung atas)

Israel's highest marked hiking trail, climbing Hermon's southern ridge from around 1,400 m to the resort's upper area at roughly 2,020–2,040 m. It crosses a military restricted zone, so it must be approved by the regional IDF brigade at least a day in advance (approval is usually routine). As a permit-free alternative, the resort chairlift/cable car delivers visitors straight to the upper area. The highest viewpoint reachable by visitors on the Israeli side is Mitzpe Hashlagim (~2,236 m). The 2,814 m true summit lies in the Syria/Lebanon sector and is not open to the public.

Sirkuit Neve Ativ – lereng Hermon via Mount Namneman

Berat — sekitar 1.200 m tanjakan; leg pulang berupa turunan beraspal curam
Sekitar 8–8,5 jam

A long, demanding circuit from Neve Ativ village past Mount Namneman toward the Hermon slopes, with roughly 1,200 m of total gain. Hikers commonly warn that the loop's return leg becomes a knee-punishing steep paved descent, so many prefer an out-and-back over the full circuit.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Mount Hermon are almost entirely documented from the Israeli side — Israel's highest marked trail, the Neve Ativ ski resort, and the Golan viewpoints. The material below covers real visits: summit-day hiking vlogs to the ~2,040 m upper area, footage of the ski resort reopening, and first-person trip reports explaining the military permit and the karst terrain. The 2,814 m true summit on the Syria/Lebanon side remains off-limits to the public.
