Description

Mount Hanang (3,420 m) is a dormant stratovolcano rising dramatically above the Hanang plains and Lake Balangida in northern Tanzania. Ranked as Tanzania's fourth-highest peak (after Kilimanjaro, Meru, and Loolmalasin), Hanang delivers a steeper single-day climb than Kilimanjaro with ~1,600 m of elevation gain in roughly 8.5 km from Katesh. The mountain is protected as the Mount Hanang Nature Forest Reserve (58.66 km²), sheltering montane evergreen forest on its upper slopes. The surrounding Hanang District is home to the Barabaig people. The summit can be reached in a single long day (~10 hours) from Katesh, or more comfortably with an overnight at a camp near 3,000 m.

The ascent is steep and relentless—Tanzania's greatest single-day elevation gain—with vegetation shifting from pine forest to afroalpine scrub then open rocky summit plateau. Lake Balangida and the Manyara savanna are visible from the top. Local guides are mandatory and available in Katesh.
