Description
Mount Hagen (about 3,778 m) is a dormant/extinct volcano in the Papua New Guinea Highlands, on the border of Western Highlands and Enga Provinces, roughly 24 km north-west of the city of Mount Hagen that takes its name. It is the second highest volcano in Papua New Guinea — behind only its neighbour Mount Giluwe, about 35 km to the south-west. The mountain is named after the German colonial officer Curt von Hagen. Unlike the busy city in the fertile Wahgi Valley below, its summit is rarely climbed: ascents are long treks through mossy montane forest and tall grassland, usually accompanied by guides from local Indigenous communities. Mist, rain, and dense forest terrain make navigation demanding, and the remoteness calls for self-reliant preparation. For hikers seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-track Highlands peak, Mount Hagen offers a wild tropical-mountain experience rich in cultural context.
Routes
SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences of climbing the Mount Hagen volcano (as opposed to the city) are thinly but genuinely documented: guided ascent vlogs from the Western Highlands side through dense montane forest and tall grassland, coming-and-going mist, and sweeping Wahgi Valley views on clear days. The references are now enriched with textual sources — PNG's official tourism portal (town context, Melpa culture, the Hagen Show), a trek operator's guide detailing itinerary and base camp, and a Wikivoyage guide (flight access, climate, history). Note: the town/region of Mount Hagen sits at ±1,677 m, while the mountain's summit is far higher (±3,778 m).
