Description

Mount Gulaga (806 m), also known as Mount Dromedary, is an extinct volcano rising on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia, near the villages of Tilba Tilba and Bermagui. To the Yuin people, Gulaga is a sacred place — the 'Mother Mountain' of deep cultural importance, especially to Yuin women; in 2006 the national park was handed back to its traditional owners in an historic agreement and is now jointly managed. The main route, the Tilba Tilba Walking Track, is about 14 km return (~5 hours, graded hard), starting near the old store in Tilba Tilba, initially following an unsealed road through open country before entering the park and climbing steadily through dense rainforest. At 'The Saddle' there are impressive granite tors before a final ascent to the summit.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Gulaga (Mount Dromedary) is climbed via the Tilba Tilba Walking Track — a steady uphill from the village of Tilba Tilba through dense rainforest to the granite tors near the summit of this extinct volcano. Beyond the hike, Gulaga is a sacred mountain to the Yuin people. The sources below document the experience of walking the trail, the rainforest setting, and the cultural context behind it.
