Best Season
Operates year-round but weather-dependent (limited in winter); March–April best for seeing the Providence Petrel near the summit
Permits & Rules
Climbing to the summit of Mount Gower legally REQUIRES a licensed guide from the Lord Howe Island Board — visitors may not climb alone (except permanent island residents). Licensed operators include Sea to Summit Expeditions (Jack Shick) and Lord Howe Environmental Tours; climbs are generally scheduled on certain days of the week
Hazards
Extreme exposure and steep drops, especially the 'Lower Road' — a clifftop traverse about 400 m long aided by fixed ropes above a drop of roughly 150 m to the sea (helmet required), and the 'Get Up Place', a steep, exposed rock pitch near the summit with fixed ropes. The unmarked trail and quickly forming fog add to the risk

Description

Mount Gower is the highest point of Lord Howe Island, New South Wales, Australia, rising to 875 metres at the southern end of this UNESCO World Heritage island. It is a volcanic remnant peak of basaltic rock, its summit plateau cloaked in humid cloud forest rich in endemic plants and animals. The climb is often called one of Australia's best and hardest day walks: a full-day trek of about 12–14 km return with roughly 830 m of ascent, crossing rope-assisted scrambling sections and highly exposed cliff-edge traverses. Its two most famous features are the 'Lower Road' — a narrow ledge of about 400 m above a sheer drop to the sea, requiring helmets and fixed ropes — and the 'Get Up Place', a steep rock pitch near the summit. Because of the danger and environmental sensitivity, the law requires the climb to be done only with a licensed guide. On clear days the summit offers panoramas of the ocean, the island, and neighbouring Mount Lidgbird; March–April is also a special time to see the Providence Petrel.

The only route to the summit of Mount Gower (875 m), a full-day trek of about 12–14 km return with roughly 830 m of ascent. From the southern shore, the trail follows the 'Lower Road' — a rope-assisted cliff-edge ledge above a drop to the sea (helmets required) — then climbs steeply through the 'Get Up Place', a steep rock pitch before the cloud-forest summit plateau. The climb is legally required to be done with a licensed guide from the Lord Howe Island Board; trips are usually scheduled on set days of the week.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Mount Gower consistently rank it among Australia's most challenging and most memorable day walks. Nearly every source stresses the mandatory licensed guide and describes the two most nerve-wracking sections: the 'Lower Road', a rope-assisted cliff-edge ledge above a drop to the sea, and the 'Get Up Place', a steep rock pitch near the summit. Vlogs and trip reports highlight the full-day duration (~8 hours), the steep climbing, the adrenaline-inducing exposure, and the lush cloud forest of the summit plateau with its endemic plants and animals. Other recurring themes are fast-rolling mist, the fitness required, and the immense satisfaction of reaching the top with views over the ocean and Mount Lidgbird.
