Description

Mount Gorongosa (Gogogo summit, ~1,863 m) is an inselberg that rises abruptly from the plains of Sofala Province in central Mozambique, at the heart of Gorongosa National Park. Its rock is igneous, dating to Early Jurassic Karoo volcanism, though it is not an active volcano today. The slopes hold pockets of mossy cloud forest full of epiphytes and ferns, with range-restricted plants and montane birds absent from the lowland safari areas. The summit hike is about 12 km one way (~24 km round trip) with ~1,500 m of gain, typically 6–8 hours up and 4–6 hours down; the terrain is moderate to challenging with steep, rocky scrambling sections. The main highlight is the 100 m-plus Murombodzi Waterfall. Because the upper mountain has been protected since 2010, climbs must be arranged through the national park with a guide, and local custom forbids wearing red clothing on the mountain.

Routes

Ekskursi Air Terjun Murombodzi (setengah–satu hari)

Sedang
6–7 jam

A shorter option focused on the Murombodzi Waterfall (100 m-plus): drive to the nearest access point, then walk through the mountain's forest to the falls and its humid microclimate. Suited to those not aiming for the Gogogo summit but still wanting Gorongosa's cloud forest.
