Description

Mount Gorongosa is an isolated massif in Sofala Province, central Mozambique; its highest peak, Gogogo, reaches 1,863 m. Wikidata Q55237011 classifies it as a mountain at 18.403889° S, 34.108750° E. Cooler, wetter slopes support montane forest and grassland above the surrounding lowlands. The area above 700 m was incorporated into Gorongosa National Park in 2010. Official visitor information supports a coffee-project visit and waterfall walk, rather than a measured summit route. Gorongosa Safaris’ 2026 sheet describes an eight-hour guided excursion covering the coffee project, Murombodzi Falls and a picnic; eight hours refers to the whole activity, not walking time. The park page describes a vehicle approach, a short hike and an April–September activity season. During a 2011 visit, Rebeccah Fleming walked about 45 minutes from Nhancucu along old hunting paths, crossed a stream on stones and climbed mossy rocks near the waterfall. David Ryan’s account, published by Rhino Africa in January 2026, highlights forest walking to look for the green-headed oriole and swimming at waterfalls.
