7.556 m
Country
People's Republic of China (CN)
Location / Range
Daxue Shan (Great Snow Mountains), Hengduan system — Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China

Non-volcanic granite peak — the highest mountain in Sichuan, the highest in mainland China outside the main Himalayan chain
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
29.5958, 101.8792
Difficulty
Highly technical and extremely dangerous — the fatality rate per ascent exceeds all 8,000-m peaks; requires mixed ice-rock skills and fixed ropes, gradual acclimatization, and full expedition support
Best Season
May–June (pre-monsoon) and September–October (post-monsoon); July–August is avoided because of the risk of avalanches and monsoon storms
Permits & Rules
A climbing permit from the Chinese Mountaineering Association (CMA) is mandatory; a certified local guide is required; access from Kangding (Dartsedo) or Luding via Moxi
Hazards
A fatality rate of ~60–80% across all climbs in its history; massive avalanches from the meeting of moist Indian Ocean air masses with cold Siberian flows; unstable glaciers; weather changes very fast; hidden crevasses; the 'The Hump' ice wall (~6,300 m)

Description

Gongga Shan (7,556 m), also known as Minya Konka (Chinese: 贡嘎山), is the highest peak in Sichuan Province and the highest mountain in mainland China outside the main Himalayan chain. Standing in the Daxue Shan (Great Snow Mountains), part of the Hengduan Mountains system, in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, it is flanked by five major glaciers. Its reputation far exceeds its elevation: only around 24 successful ascents have been recorded against more than 37 fatalities, giving Gongga Shan a death-per-attempt ratio that surpasses K2, Annapurna, and every 8,000-metre peak. The primary hazard is weather — the collision of moist Bay of Bengal air masses with cold Siberian outflows creates sudden storms, extreme avalanche conditions, and very narrow weather windows. The first ascent was completed on 28 October 1932 by Richard Burdsall and Terris Moore of an American expedition via the northwest ridge, a record American altitude that stood for 26 years. For non-technical visitors, the Hailuogou Glacier Forest National Park on the eastern flank offers access to the glacier (descending to 2,850 m a.s.l.), spectacular ice falls, and natural hot springs at the mountain's base.

Routes

Jalur Punggung Tenggara (Southeast Ridge) — Rute Normal

Sangat teknis / ekstrem (salju, es, mixed; kelas 5 di bagian atas)
45.00 km +3400 m Ekspedisi 3–5 minggu (termasuk pendekatan & aklimatisasi)

Route Segments

  1. 1

Luding/Moxi → Base Camp (Glasier Reddomain)

    ↔ 20 km ↑ 1200 m ⏱ 2–3 hari jalan kaki 4.200 mdpl

Trek melalui hutan lebat dan dusun-dusun terpencil; base camp di tepi glasier

  2. 2

    Base Camp → Camp I

    ↑ 600 m ⏱ 5–7 jam 4.800 mdpl

Menyeberangi moraine glasier dan memasuki medan salju pertama

  3. 3

Camp I → Camp II → Camp III

    ↑ 900 m ⏱ 2 hari (aklimatisasi bolak-balik) 5.700 mdpl

Punggung salju dan es; crampons & tali tetap wajib

  4. 4

    Camp III → Camp IV → Puncak 7.556 m

    ↑ 1856 m ⏱ 2–3 hari (camp IV ~5.900 m, summit push dari camp IV) 7.556 mdpl

Zona kematian di atas 7.000 m; dorongan puncak memerlukan kondisi cuaca sangat baik dan tim berpengalaman

Trekking Gongga Manaslu Circuit (Lingkaran Besar via Desa Terpencil)

Sulit (ketinggian 2.000–4.800 m, celah pegunungan, iklim tidak menentu)
120.00 km +5000 m 8–12 hari

Climbing Experiences

Gongga Shan, or Minya Konka (7,556 m), is the highest peak in the Hengduan Mountains and the most dangerous mountain in China — its death rate per attempt rivals many 8,000 m peaks. The 1932 American expedition was the first successful ascent; dozens of lives have been lost on the snow and ice of the southeast ridge since. Yet its lower eastern flanks (Hailuogou National Glacier Forest Park) offer an accessible glacier, subtropical subalpine forest, and natural hot springs — making Gongga Shan a destination for professional climbers and nature tourists alike.
