Puncak granit sub-alpine berpunggungan lebar dengan blok batu di kawasan puncak — bukan gunung berapi
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
-35.5817, 148.7844
Difficulty
Best Season
Musim semi sampai musim gugur.
Hazards

Description

Mount Gingera (1,857 m) stands in the Brindabella Range on the ACT–NSW border, with its summit on the ACT side. It is the territory's second highest peak, and the most prominent snow-covered summit visible from Canberra in winter. The ACT portion lies in Namadgi National Park, the NSW portion in Bimberi Nature Reserve. Its topographic prominence is about 357 m. The appeal is not the altitude but the layers of landscape a single day's walk passes through. The classic route leaves the Corin Dam car park at around 965 m and climbs hard straight away: the first 2 km or so gain about 580 m through forest on well-built steps. The track then changes character, following the gentler Stockyard Spur through snow gum woodland for roughly 4 km, with a viewpoint over Little Ginini Mountain. The third section uses Mt Franklin Road — a 4WD track — before branching onto a narrow, unmarked trail to the top. The summit is a rocky granite plateau with 360-degree views: the surrounding peaks of Ginini, Bimberi, Coronet, Namadgi and Orroral, Tantangara Reservoir, Canberra in the distance, and on very clear days the Snowy Mountains and Mount Kosciuszko. Between track and summit sits Pryors Hut, a historic 1952 shelter that serves both as refuge and as the usual base for those making it an overnight trip. From the hut the summit is typically about 1.5 hours return. The area matters ecologically too. Sub-alpine sphagnum bogs on the flanks of Gingera and neighbouring Mount Ginini support the endangered Northern Corroboree Frog — good reason to stay on track and off the wetlands. In spring the slopes flower: yellow peas, purple hovea, beard heath, mountain caladenia orchids, and yellow phebalium around the summit. For those unwilling to climb 1,100 m there is an honest shortcut: drive to the Mount Ginini car park and walk in along Mt Franklin Road. In winter that road is usually closed by snow — which is also what makes the Brindabellas the northernmost cross-country skiing terrain in the Australian Alps.

Routes

Corin Dam → Stockyard Spur → Mt Franklin Road → puncak (rute klasik, PP)

The main Mount Gingera route splits cleanly into three sections of different character. First: from the Corin Dam car park at around 965 m, roughly 2 km of hard climbing gaining about 580 m through forest on constructed steps — the section people complain about most. Second: about 4 km along Stockyard Spur on a much gentler management trail through snow gum woodland, with a viewpoint over Little Ginini Mountain. Third: joining Mt Franklin Road (a 4WD track), passing Pryors Hut, built in 1952, then branching onto a narrow, sometimes overgrown foot track up the eastern slope to the rocky granite summit plateau at 1,857 m. Dogs and mountain bikes are prohibited. For an overnight, a free Bimberi Wilderness camping permit from ACT Parks and Conservation must be arranged beforehand.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Corin Dam carpark (965 m) → Stockyard Spur

    ↔ 2 km ↑ 580 m

Bagian tersulit: tanjakan curam berterusan lewat anak tangga. Beberapa penulis laporan menyebutnya "gruelling"; turunnya di akhir hari terkenal menyiksa lutut.

  2. 2

Stockyard Spur → pertemuan dengan Mt Franklin Road

    ↔ 4 km

  3. 3

Mt Franklin Road → Pryors Hut

Jalan 4WD. Pryors Hut (dibangun 1952) jadi tempat berteduh sekaligus basis bermalam paling lazim; dari pondok, puncak sekitar 1,5 jam pulang-pergi.

  4. 4

Pryors Hut → puncak Mount Gingera (1.857 m)

    1.857 mdpl

Jalur setapak sempit tak bertanda, kadang tertutup semak, naik lereng timur ±180 m terakhir. Puncaknya dataran granit dengan cairn dan panorama 360°: Ginini, Bimberi, Coronet, Namadgi, Orroral, Waduk Tantangara, Canberra, sampai Snowy Mountains pada hari cerah.

Mount Ginini carpark → Mt Franklin Road → puncak (alternatif ringan)

Ringan–moderat — menghilangkan hampir seluruh tanjakan curam
Setengah hari

The honest alternative for anyone unwilling to climb more than a thousand metres: drive to the Mount Ginini car park, then walk south along Mt Franklin Road before branching onto the same summit track. Because the road already sits high on the ridge, most of the height gain has been done by vehicle. The catch is seasonal: in winter Mt Franklin Road is usually closed by snow — the very condition that makes this the northernmost cross-country skiing terrain in the Australian Alps.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Mount Ginini carpark → Mt Franklin Road

Akses berkendara sampai dekat punggungan; jalan biasanya ditutup pada musim bersalju.

  2. 2

Mt Franklin Road → Pryors Hut → puncak

    1.857 mdpl

Bergabung dengan bagian akhir rute klasik: jalur setapak sempit ke dataran puncak berbatu granit.

Climbing Experiences

Gingera trip reports almost always talk about the first two kilometres. From the Corin Dam car park at around 965 m the track climbs about 580 m straight up on steps — a section one writer calls "gruelling" and nearly everyone else concedes is hard. After Stockyard Spur the tone changes completely: the gradient eases, snow gum woodland opens up, and people start mentioning wildflowers, the viewpoint over Little Ginini Mountain, and the quiet of a long management trail. Pryors Hut, built in 1952, appears in nearly every account, either as a brief shelter or as an overnight base. The summit is a rocky granite plateau with 360-degree views — Bimberi, Ginini, Coronet, Namadgi, Orroral, Tantangara Reservoir, and Canberra and the Snowy Mountains beyond. The most common warning is not about the climb but the descent: the last two kilometres back down to the dam are described as knee-jarring. Reported times run to about 4.5 hours up and under 3 hours down for a family party, while guides call the 20–21 km return trip a full day.
