Information

Elevation
4.367 m
Country
Papua Nugini (PG)
Location / Range
Southern Highlands, near Tambul, Papua New Guinea — the second-highest mountain in PNG
Mountain type
Eroded shield volcano/stratovolcano with two volcanic plugs at the summit — the highest volcano in Oceania
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-6.0389, 143.8861
Difficulty
Non-technical but long and remote: a multi-day approach trek across alpine grasslands, with a little rock scrambling near the summit. Requires good fitness, not ropes/ice axe
Best Season
The drier season is around May–October; avoid the peak of the rainy season so the grasslands are not too muddy
Permits & Rules
There is no formal national permit system; access is across customary land, so using a local guide/porter and negotiating access with the local community is mandatory
Hazards
Altitude (>4,300 m) and the potential for altitude sickness, cold & frost despite being near the equator, remoteness with limited rescue, swampy/muddy grasslands, fog, and rapidly changing weather

Description

Mount Giluwe (4,367 m) is the second-highest mountain in Papua New Guinea and the highest volcano in Oceania, making it a key objective for climbers of the "Volcanic Seven Summits". Unlike its neighbour Mount Wilhelm, which is metamorphic rock, Giluwe is an ancient shield volcano long extinct and deeply eroded, leaving two dramatic volcanic plugs as its summits. Its upper slopes spread into one of the world's largest tropical alpine grasslands — a remnant landscape that was once glaciated during the Pleistocene ice ages. The climb starts from villages around Tambul in the Southern Highlands, passing through mossy forest before emerging onto open grassland toward a base camp near 3,660–3,720 m. Summit day usually begins before dawn, crossing boggy grassland and then large rock blocks to a short scramble onto one of the volcanic plugs. Though it requires no rope or ice axe, Giluwe demands good fitness, readiness for highland tropical cold, and logistics for very remote terrain.

Routes

Ekspedisi gabungan Giluwe + Mount Wilhelm

Rute Mendi / Lereng Utara (rute standar ekspedisi)

Hari puncak umumnya start dini hari dan butuh 2–3 jam, melewati padang rumput berawa lalu blok batu besar menuju dua sumbat vulkanik puncak.

Climbing Experiences

Climbers' accounts of Mount Giluwe are fairly consistent: the trek leaves villages around Tambul, passing through mossy forest before emerging onto broad alpine grassland, then camps at a base camp around 3,660–3,720 m. Summit day starts before dawn, crossing boggy grassland and large rock blocks with one short steep section onto the summit volcanic plug. Full video series from Volcanic Seven Summits climbers (who climb Giluwe alongside Mount Wilhelm) often describe it as tough but non-technical, with remoteness, highland tropical cold, and muddy terrain as the main challenges. Many praise the beauty of the endless grassland and Giluwe's status as Oceania's highest volcano, while stressing the need for local guides and expedition logistics.
