Description

Mount Gharat, or Mount Garet (797 m), is the highest peak of Gaua Island in the Banks Islands of northern Vanuatu — a somma volcano whose active cone rises inside an older caldera, right on the shore of Lake Letas, the largest freshwater lake in Vanuatu. Climbing Gharat is one of Vanuatu's most demanding wilderness adventures: the popular trek runs up to three days, passing local gardens, coconut plantations, dense jungle and rivers, then crossing Lake Letas by outrigger canoe before a steep, exposed climb of about an hour to the sulphur-fuming crater rim. The area is also famous for the ~120 m Siri Waterfall — billed as the tallest in the South Pacific — and natural hot springs on the lake shore. Trips are led by accredited local custom guides, with overnight stays at a simple lakeside camp complete with storytelling and kava. Because Gharat is active, climbs follow Vanuatu's official volcanic alert level.
