Information
- Elevation
- 872 m
- Country
- Ghana (GH)
- Location / Range
- Akwapim–Togo Ranges, Volta Region — Distrik Ho West (Avatime Traditional Area)
- Mountain type
- Puncak punggungan di jajaran Akwapim–Togo
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 6.8569, 0.4336
- Difficulty
- Mudah–sedang.
Description
Mount Gemi rises above the village of Amedzofe in Ghana's Volta Region, part of the Akwapim–Togo Ranges that run from Ghana into Togo and parts of Benin. Amedzofe itself is often described as the highest settlement in Ghana, sitting at about 677 m, so the climb to Gemi is short even though the view is wide. Local guides give the summit as roughly 872 m, and in Ghana the peak is commonly called the country's second highest. Its most recognisable feature is the large iron cross erected by German missionaries in the 1930s, standing on the heights alongside a church and bell tower. The name "Gemi" comes from the initials of the German mission body that once worked here — local guides render it as the German/Ghana Evangelical Mission Institute. Traces of that period remain in the village: the Amedzofe training school was built by German missionaries in 1880, and the oldest EP church in the Avatime Traditional Area dates from 1889. The area was once part of German Togoland under the Bremen Mission. The walk is short and suits almost anyone: from 20 minutes to about 1.5 hours from the village, with several routes of differing steepness. The summit gives a 360-degree panorama over the Volta hills and, on clear days, towards Lake Volta; in the dry season harmattan haze often closes the view down. Gemi is rarely visited on its own. Village visits usually combine it with a canopy walkway and a descent of several hundred steps to the Ote Waterfall and its natural pools, plus the village market, mission-era architecture and the distinctive local stone-slab chairs. From Accra, Amedzofe is about 2.5–3 hours' drive via the Ho road, with the final stretch into the village in poor condition.
Routes
Canopy walkway & 259 anak tangga ke Air Terjun Ote
Sedang — turunan panjang bertangga, curam, berpengaman di sebagian ruasThe second trail, almost always paired with the Gemi climb. It runs through forest via a canopy walkway and then down 259 steps to the Ote Waterfall and its natural pools; the tourism authority describes the trek as crossing farmland with steep railed sections and taking about two hours. Water flow peaks between May and November, and parts of the path are shaded, making it kinder than Gemi's open slope. Entry is around 75 GHS and the site opens daily at 08:00. The hard part is the return: every one of those steps has to be climbed back up.

Mudah–sedang; curam tetapi pendek, tanpa naunganThe main route starts straight from Amedzofe village, already at about 677 m, so the remaining climb to the summit is short if steep. Ghana's tourism authority describes it as roughly a 1.5-hour ascent with a 360-degree panorama on top, while visitors taking the shortest line report only 20–30 minutes of walking. Several routes of differing steepness exist, so the effort can be matched to the group. The summit is marked by the large iron cross built by German missionaries in the 1930s, beside a church and bell tower, facing towards Lake Volta. Because the slope has almost no shade, an early start is advised; in the November–March dry season haze often cuts the view. The area opens 06:00–17:30 and a village guide is required, with entry around 55 GHS.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Nearly every account of visiting Mount Gemi highlights the same pleasant contrast: small effort, big payoff. Because Amedzofe village already sits around 677 m, the walk to the summit is reported as anything from 20 minutes to about 1.5 hours depending on route and pace, and visitors are still required to take a village guide for a modest fee. On top stands the large iron cross left by German missionaries in the 1930s, the landmark in every photograph. The panorama is a full 360 degrees over the Volta hills — though several visitors note Lake Volta is not always visible through the haze. The path has almost no shade, so an early start is consistently advised. Most visitors combine Gemi with the canopy walkway and a descent of several hundred steps to the Ote Waterfall, plus the village's German mission heritage: church, bell tower and old school buildings. From Accra the drive takes 2.5–3 hours, with the final stretch into the village in poor condition — some people switch to motorbikes for it.
