Description

Mount Garibaldi (2,678 m) is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, rising north of Squamish as the centrepiece of Garibaldi Provincial Park. It is geologically unusual because part of its edifice was built on top of glacial ice during the Pleistocene; when that ice melted the support was lost, destabilising the western side, which partly collapsed and left crumbly volcanic rock. Reaching the summit is generally a glaciated mountaineering objective: climbers cross the Warren Glacier or Garibaldi Névé, so glacier-travel skills, ropes and crevasse-rescue ability are needed. Common approaches are via Brohm Ridge (from logging roads) and the Garibaldi Névé ski traverse through Diamond Head/Elfin Lakes. Its traditional Squamish name is Nch'kay̓.

Routes

Garibaldi Névé Traverse (Diamond Head → Elfin Lakes → Névé)

Berat (ski mountaineering / glasier)
2–4 hari (traverse)

Via Brohm Ridge (sisi timur laut / Warren Glacier)

Berat (mountaineering berglasier)
2–3 hari

Pendekatan klasik dari jalan hutan menuju Brohm Ridge, lalu mendaki melintasi Warren Glacier ke puncak. Memerlukan perjalanan gletser bertali dan penanganan crevasse; bagian atas berupa salju/es dan batuan vulkanik rapuh.

Climbing Experiences

Reaching the summit of Mount Garibaldi is almost always a glaciated climb: parties approach via Brohm Ridge or cross the Garibaldi Névé, then ascend snow and glacier on the northeast side. Climbers' and skiers' reports stress the need for glacier-travel skills, the fast-changing Coast weather, and crumbly volcanic rock near the top. The videos below document a ski ascent, a summit push, and steep snow terrain on the mountain.
