Description

Fitz Roy (3,405 m, Tehuelche name: Chaltén, meaning 'smoking mountain') is an iconic granite massif in Patagonia, Argentina, within Los Glaciares National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) — the peak that inspired the Patagonia brand logo. Despite its modest elevation, Fitz Roy ranks among the hardest climbs on Earth: unpredictable Patagonian winds, near-vertical granite walls, and an extremely narrow season (Nov–Mar) make the summit accessible only to elite big-wall climbers. For trekkers, the route to Laguna de los Tres from El Chaltén (~20 km round trip) is one of the finest mountain walks in the southern Andes, with dramatic spire silhouettes reflected in tiered glacial lakes.

Climbing Experiences

Monte Fitz Roy (3,405 m) in Los Glaciares National Park, Argentine Patagonia — called 'El Chaltén' (smoking mountain) by the Tehuelche people. The trek to Laguna de los Tres from El Chaltén village (~20 km RT) is one of South America's most iconic day hikes, offering spectacular granite tower views. Technical summit climbing is an elite expedition. Trekkers highlight Patagonian wind unpredictability, the steep final climb to the lagoon, and El Chaltén's hiker-friendly infrastructure.
