Description

Mount Field West (1,434 m) is the highest point of Mount Field National Park, about 64 km north-west of Hobart, Tasmania. This dolerite peak crowns one of Tasmania's first two national parks (declared 1916). The usual approach starts at Lake Dobson and follows the Tarn Shelf—famous for its chain of glacial tarns and the golden autumn colour of deciduous beech (Nothofagus gunnii)—before climbing onto the Rodway Range and K Col, with a final off-track section to the summit. The landscape ranges from wet eucalypt forest to alpine moorland, giving broad views over the Tasmanian central highlands.

Routes

A multi-day circuit that makes Mount Field West the highlight of a three-day, two-night trip from Lake Dobson. The route crosses Lake Webster–Twisted Tarn to Newdegate Pass (K Col), then the Mt Field West Track past Peterson Memorial Hut and Clemes Tarn to the summit (1,434 m), returning via the Rodway Range with a large boulder climb and the 'Lions Den' rock valley. About 26 km total; many walkers camp near the alpine tarns. Parks Pass, navigation and cold-weather gear are essential.

Sehari penuh panjang atau 2 hari (bermalam)

The main route starts at the Lake Dobson car park (~1,030 m). The track climbs to the Tarn Shelf—a glacial bench of small tarns famed for its golden autumn beech colour—then follows the Rodway Range to K Col. From K Col the going becomes off-track across alpine moorland and dolerite terrain to the summit of Mount Field West (1,434 m). Given its length and alpine exposure, many walkers camp near the tarns. A Parks Pass is required; carry navigation and cold-weather gear.
