Best Season: Musim kemarau Ethiopia (Oktober–Maret) paling nyaman; mulai mendaki subuh untuk menghindari panas siang. CATATAN: sejak akhir 2024 kompleks Fentale–Dofen mengalami krisis kegempaan/magmatik yang mengungsikan puluhan ribu warga, sehingga akses bisa dibatasi atau tidak aman — periksa status terkini sebelum berencana ke sana.
Permits & Rules: Berada di dalam Taman Nasional Awash: tiket masuk taman (biaya kecil) dan biasanya wajib memakai pemandu/pengawal setempat. Ikuti pengumuman otoritas taman, terlebih saat ada peringatan aktivitas vulkanik.
Hazards: Bahaya vulkanik (fumarol/uap panas dari lantai kaldera, dan unrest magmatik-kegempaan sejak 2024), medan berbatu curam, panas dan kelangkaan air di lereng kering, serta risiko tersesat di jalur atas yang samar.

Description

Fentale (Fantale, about 2,007 m) is an active volcano in the Main Ethiopian Rift, rising roughly 600 m above the arid plains at the western end of Awash National Park in Oromia. Its summit is not a sharp cone but an elliptical caldera about 3.5 km across; the caldera floor still vents steam from cracks in the rock and is grazed by local cattle. On its southern flank runs the hardened lava scar of a major eruption in 1820 — a reminder the mountain is only dormant, not dead. Climbing it is a popular day trip from the Addis–Awash highway: from a base around 900 m, hikers ascend about 3 hours through acacia scrub to the caldera rim for a 360° panorama over the rift plains and Lake Beseka. At its foot lie the Fiwuha (Filwoha) hot springs (~40 °C), the usual place to unwind afterwards. Since late 2024 the Fentale–Dofen area has been shaken by a seismic and magmatic crisis that displaced tens of thousands, so current safety conditions should be checked before any visit.

Fentale's standard route: from the mountain's base in the Awash National Park area (~900 m), climb about 3 hours through rocky volcanic slopes and dry acacia scrub to the elliptical caldera rim (~2,007 m). The southern flank shows the 1820 lava scar, and the caldera floor still vents steam. The summit gives a 360° panorama over the rift plains and Lake Beseka; camping on the rim is possible for sunrise. A local guide is advised, and volcanic-activity status should be checked given the unrest since late 2024.
