Information

Elevation
3.916 m
Country
Turki (TR)
Location / Range
Standalone stratovolcano in Kayseri Province, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Mountain type
Stratovolcano (dormant — last eruption estimated thousands of years ago)
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
38.5320, 35.4500
Difficulty
Moderate–difficult (non-technical trekking over loose volcanic rock and scree; the summit climb requires good physical preparation, navigation without a clear trail in the upper section, and wind gear; outside the ski season, a guide is recommended for the dangerous upper section)
Best Season
July–September (summer — snow-free trail, best weather for the summit climb); December–March (ski season on the lower slopes); avoid the snow-transition periods of April–June and October–November due to soft ice
Permits & Rules
No official climbing permit is required. The Erciyes ski resort (Erciyes A.Ş.) operates facilities on the lower slopes (elevation ~2,150–3,300 m); the independent climb to the summit (3,917 m) starts from the resort's top camp or from the city of Kayseri.
Hazards
Loose volcanic rock and dangerous scree (rockfall) in the upper section; sudden strong winds; rapidly changing weather, especially in the afternoon; poor visibility in fog; no water sources above 3,000 m; very cold in winter (cold wind above 3,500 m even in summer); no official trail above the highest gondola point

Description

Mount Erciyes (Erciyes Dağı, 3,916 m) is an inactive stratovolcano in Kayseri Province, Turkey, and the highest point of central Anatolia. It is a large volcano surrounded by many monogenetic vents and lava domes, its bulk built from andesitic and dacitic lava flows; part of its summit collapsed toward the east in the past. Its last eruptions are thought to have occurred in the early Holocene. The mountain was glaciated during the Pleistocene, and one small, receding glacier still remains. Today Erciyes is both a climbing objective and home to the Erciyes Ski Resort on its northern slopes, whose cable cars and gondolas carry visitors up to around 3,400 m. A summer ascent of Büyük Erciyes (the main summit) is a volcanic-rock scramble that grows increasingly exposed near the top, while winter turns it into a far more demanding snow-and-ice alpine climb. From the summit, wide views open over the surrounding Cappadocian highlands.

Routes

Rute Klasik via Resor Ski (Classic Route)

The most common route to summit Erciyes, utilizing the Erciyes A.Ş. ski resort as a starting point (~2,150 m). In summer, the gondola (teleferik) operates up to ~3,300 m, shortening the total time and elevation gain on foot. From the top gondola station, the route crosses volcanic scree terrain (loose dark igneous rock) toward the visible summit above. No trail is officially marked above this point; navigation relies on terrain reading and GPS. The upper ridge (~3,600–3,917 m) is exposed to strong winds and can be slippery when wet. The summit (3,917 m) commands views of the Anatolian plateau, Kayseri below, and on clear days Mount Hasan Dağı to the west and the Taurus ranges to the south.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Kota Kayseri → Kamp Dasar Resor Ski

    ⏱ 25–30 menit berkendara 2.150 mdpl

Jarak ~25 km dari pusat kota Kayseri; angkutan umum tersedia dari terminal

  2. 2

Kamp Dasar Resor → Puncak Gondola

    ⏱ 15–20 menit (gondola/teleferik) atau 2–3 jam jalan kaki 3.300 mdpl

Gondola beroperasi musim panas; jalan kaki alternatif via piste ski yang terbuka

  3. 3

    Puncak Gondola → Puncak Erciyes

    ⏱ 3–4 jam (pendakian), 2–3 jam (turun) 3.917 mdpl

Scree longgar berbatuan vulkanik; tidak ada jalur resmi; angin kencang sering terjadi; GPS dianjurkan

Rute North Face via Şeytan Deresi (Jalur Teknis Musim Dingin)

A technical alternative route via Erciyes's northern flank through the Şeytan Deresi (Devil's Stream) valley, where permanent ice exists even in summer. Rarely attempted compared to the classic route; primarily used by Turkish alpinists seeking higher technical challenge. Winter conditions (December–March) turn this into a serious ice/mixed climb requiring full alpine equipment and the ability to navigate steep icy terrain.
