Stratovolcano (dormant — last eruption estimated thousands of years ago)
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
38.5320, 35.4500
Difficulty
Moderate–difficult (non-technical trekking over loose volcanic rock and scree; the summit climb requires good physical preparation, navigation without a clear trail in the upper section, and wind gear; outside the ski season, a guide is recommended for the dangerous upper section)
Best Season
July–September (summer — snow-free trail, best weather for the summit climb); December–March (ski season on the lower slopes); avoid the snow-transition periods of April–June and October–November due to soft ice
Permits & Rules
No official climbing permit is required. The Erciyes ski resort (Erciyes A.Ş.) operates facilities on the lower slopes (elevation ~2,150–3,300 m); the independent climb to the summit (3,917 m) starts from the resort's top camp or from the city of Kayseri.
Hazards
Loose volcanic rock and dangerous scree (rockfall) in the upper section; sudden strong winds; rapidly changing weather, especially in the afternoon; poor visibility in fog; no water sources above 3,000 m; very cold in winter (cold wind above 3,500 m even in summer); no official trail above the highest gondola point

Description

Erciyes Dağı (3,917 m) is the highest peak in central Anatolia and the most prominent landmark of Kayseri Province, rising ~25 km south of the city of Kayseri in central Turkey. Geologically, Erciyes is a large stratovolcano built by repeated volcanic activity, with a broad summit crater and characteristic volcanic rock terrain on its upper flanks. In antiquity the mountain was known as Argaeus or Argaios, featured on Roman coins, and visited by ancient travellers crossing Anatolia. Today Erciyes is best known as one of Turkey's premier ski destinations: Erciyes Kayak Merkezi (Erciyes Ski Centre) runs over 30 ski runs and a modern gondola reaching approximately 3,300 m — just ~600 m below the summit. The summit hike begins from the top gondola station (in summer) or from the resort's starting camp, ascending scree slopes and frozen lava rock toward the upper ridge. Above 3,500 m strong winds and indistinct trails make navigation challenging; a guide or GPS is strongly recommended. The summit commands wide views of the Anatolian plateau, surrounding peaks, and on a clear day even Mount Hasan (3,268 m) and the Taurus ranges to the south.

Climbing Experiences

Erciyes Dağı (3,917 m) is central Anatolia's highest stratovolcano and one of Turkey's top ski destinations, as well as a summer summit objective. The videos and guides below cover the ascent from the ski resort camp, scree conditions above 3,500 m, and summit panoramas. All links are verified.
