Description

Mount Entoto (3,200 m) is the highest peak of the Entoto Mountains that wall off the northern side of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital. This eucalyptus-forested ridge is the city's quick-escape playground: hiking trails, running tracks, and bike lanes climb the slopes to breezy viewpoints with sweeping panoramas over Addis Ababa. Entoto is also steeped in history — Emperor Menelik II briefly made it his seat of government in the late 19th century, leaving palaces and old churches (Entoto Maryam). Rising above 3,000 m, its slopes are a favourite training ground for Ethiopia's distance runners. Since the opening of Entoto Natural Park, the area has added recreation such as paved paths, a zipline, and sports facilities, while still offering natural treks to the summit.

Entoto's most popular hiking route, a loop through eucalyptus forest to the highest ridge (~3,200 m) above Addis Ababa. Most hikers reach the top in 1.5–2.5 hours, with a 3–5 hour round trip depending on fitness. The trail passes eucalyptus stands, the old Entoto Maryam church and Menelik II's palace site, then climbs to a breezy ridge with city panoramas. Sitting above 3,000 m, the area is often used by Ethiopian runners for altitude training; visitors should acclimatize.
