Description

Mount Edith Cavell (3,363 m) is the most prominent peak near the town of Jasper, Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies. Named for the World War I nurse Edith Cavell, it is famous for the Angel Glacier — a hanging glacier whose 'wings' drape over a cliff hundreds of metres high on the north face, clearly seen from Cavell Meadows. The first ascent was made by A.J. Gilmour and E.W.D. Holway in 1915; its storied North Face was first climbed by Yvon Chouinard, Fred Beckey and Dan Doody on 20–21 July 1961. Most visitors enjoy two popular hikes — the Path of the Glacier to the glacial lake below the cliff, and the Cavell Meadows trail with alpine wildflowers and Angel Glacier views.

Routes

Cavell Meadows Trail

Sedang (±8 km PP, naik ±370 m)
+370 m 3–4 jam (PP)

An uphill trail of about 8 km round trip (≈370 m gain) through forest that opens into the alpine wildflower meadows of Cavell Meadows. Viewpoints offer broad panoramas of the Angel Glacier and Mount Edith Cavell's north face. The upper section can hold snow into early summer.

East Ridge (Pendakian Puncak)

Sedang–berat (alpine; glasier, salju & scramble terbuka)
+1500 m 10–14 jam

A summit climb to 3,363 m via the east ridge — an exposed alpine ascent requiring snow/glacier travel skills, crampons and ice axe, and careful weather management. The first ascent was in 1915 (Gilmour & Holway). By contrast, the storied North Face is far harder (IV, 5.8; first climbed by Chouinard–Beckey–Doody in 1961) and is only for experienced technical climbers.

Path of the Glacier Trail

Mudah (loop ±1,6 km)
+60 m 1–1,5 jam

A short paved/rocky loop of about 1.6 km to a small glacial pond (Cavell Pond) at the foot of the north wall. From here you see the hanging Angel Glacier and remnants of the Ghost Glacier. Suitable for almost all visitors and the easiest introduction to the Edith Cavell landscape.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Edith Cavell (3,363 m) in Jasper has two faces: popular hikes (Path of the Glacier & Cavell Meadows) with Angel Glacier views, and an alpine summit ascent via the East/West Ridge. Climber content highlights the hanging glacier, icy terrain, and Canadian Rockies panoramas.
