- Country
- Australia (AU)
- Location / Range
- Yarra Ranges National Park, ujung barat Victorian Alps, Wurundjeri Country, Victoria
- Mountain type
- Puncak hutan pegunungan non-vulkanik di ujung barat Victorian Alps; puncaknya bisa dicapai lewat jalan beraspal
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- -37.7064, 145.6811
- Difficulty
Description
Mount Donna Buang (1,250 m) rises about 94 km from Melbourne above the town of Warburton, in Yarra Ranges National Park. Its name comes from the Wurundjeri language and is glossed as "the body of the mountain"; European settlers briefly called it Mount Acland in the 1860s before the Aboriginal name returned to use. Its reputation is simple but durable: this is the closest snowfield to Melbourne, and one of the most accessible alpine summits in Victoria because a sealed road runs all the way to the top. A 21-metre observation tower stands at the summit. On a clear day it takes in the Upper Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges, the Cathedral Ranges to the north, Mount Buller to the north-east and Mount Baw Baw to the south-east. The summit area has picnic tables, toilets and a lookout, and entry is free. What makes the mountain interesting on foot is not the summit but what the climb passes through. The lower slopes are cool temperate rainforest of myrtle beech and giant Mountain Ash with stands of tree ferns; higher up this gives way to alpine ash and then snow gums. The area supports around 120 native bird species and rare mammals such as Leadbeater's possum, and even has an endemic insect, the Mount Donna Buang wingless stonefly. There is also a Skywalk, a canopy walkway carrying visitors up into the forest crown. Its recreational history is long. From 1925 until the early 1950s the mountain ran as a ski resort with four lodges and several runs. That role has shifted to winter snow play, bushwalking and cycling — the 16.6 km Warburton-to-summit road, averaging 6.2%, is a standard Melbourne climb. Walkers have two ways to enjoy it. The hard way starts at Martyr Road / St Johns Road in Warburton, follows a bridleway through three forest types, crosses the Aqueduct Trail, climbs to Donna Buang Road (C505), passes the Mount Victoria microwave tower and reaches the summit — roughly 1,100 m of ascent. The easy way is to park at the top and walk 1.2 km to the 10 Mile Picnic Area or loop 6 km via Mount Victoria.

Routes
Loop puncak: Mt Donna Buang → Mt Victoria → 10 Mile → kembali
ModeratThe option for those who drive to the summit and do not want to arrange a car shuttle. This 6 km loop links the summit with Mount Victoria and the 10 Mile picnic area, with only about 290 m of total climbing. It passes through the same montane forest as the long route, without the 1,100 m ascent from Warburton.

Grade 4 (berat) — curam, kasar, dan menuntut; untuk pejalan berpengalamanThe classic route starts in Warburton at around 152 m and ends at the summit near 1,245 m — effectively one long climb with little flat relief. Bushwalking Victoria gives the start as the covered picnic area at the base of Martyrs Road / St Johns Road, near 25 Dammans Rd. The track follows a bridleway through three forest types in sequence — Mountain Ash, Myrtle Beech, then Snow Gum — crosses the Aqueduct Trail, and runs along an old Telstra ground line for about 3 km to Donna Buang Road (C505). From there two options lead to the summit, one via the Mount Victoria microwave tower. Average gradient is about 19% (1 in 5), and the surface can be very slippery when wet — poles are recommended.

Climbing Experiences
Accounts of Donna Buang split neatly into two groups, and that is exactly what makes the mountain interesting. The first drives to the summit, climbs the 21 m tower, and comes away with Yarra Valley panoramas — or, in the cold months, with snow-play footage. The second starts in Warburton and spends half a day climbing: roughly 1,100–1,180 m of ascent through giant Mountain Ash, myrtle beech and tree ferns before reaching the snow gums above. The recurring themes in the second group never change — the climb is long and almost never flattens out, the surface is slippery when wet, leeches appear in damp conditions, and the summit runs about 10 °C colder than the town. Nearly every guide recommends walking up from below in summer or the shoulder seasons, and taking the short Mount Victoria–10 Mile loop if you start from the summit car park instead.
