Description
Mount Damota (also spelled Damot) is the highest peak in Wolayita, South Ethiopia Regional State, rising to nearly 2,750 m above sea level. It lies about 12 km north of the town of Wolaita Sodo, straddling the Damot Gale, Boloso Sore and Soddo Zuria districts. Damota is an important water tower: it is the source of many springs and small rivers flowing outward in a radial pattern — among them the Hamessa, Waja, Bisare and Gazina — that recharge groundwater and surface water and supply clean drinking water to the northern part of Wolaita Sodo. Beyond its ecology, Damota carries deep cultural and historical meaning for the Wolayita people: it once served as a place of coronation and burial for Wolayita kings. Today its slopes are a popular hiking destination, with a trail to the summit, a hilltop Selassie church, and sweeping views over the Wolayita highlands.
