Description

Mount Coot-tha is a forested hill about 287 metres high at the eastern end of the Taylor Range, on the western edge of the city of Brisbane, Queensland. Its summit is Brisbane's best-known lookout: from a terrace equipped with a cafe and restaurant, visitors take in a sweeping panorama of the city all the way to Moreton Bay and its islands in the distance. It is not a volcano but is built of old metasedimentary rock, and the summit can be reached both by driving a sealed road and on foot through dry sclerophyll forest. At its foot lie the 52-hectare Brisbane Botanic Gardens and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, while a nearby ridge carries Brisbane's major television and radio transmission towers. The name 'Coot-tha' replaced the earlier 'One Tree Hill' in 1883 and is believed to derive from the Yugara word 'ku-ta', meaning honey — a reference to local Aboriginal people gathering honey in the area. A network of tracks such as the Summit Track, JC Slaughter Falls, Simpson Falls and the Powerful Owl Track makes it a favourite everyday recreation and hiking destination for Brisbane residents.

The most popular walking route to the summit lookout: starting from the JC Slaughter Falls picnic area at the foot of the hill, the track climbs gradually through dry sclerophyll forest to the Summit lookout terrace overlooking Brisbane. Along the way are interpretive signs and an Aboriginal art trail. Alternatively, the summit can be reached by driving a sealed road.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Mount Coot-tha split into two themes: a relaxed visit to the summit lookout for the Brisbane city panorama, and hiking the network of forest tracks on its slopes. Vlogs highlight the sweeping view from the lookout terrace — a favourite at sunset and after dark when the city lights come on — while hiking videos follow the Summit Track from JC Slaughter Falls and the Simpson Falls and Powerful Owl trails through dry sclerophyll forest. Other recurring themes are the easy access from the city centre, hot and humid weather, and the variety of tracks for different fitness levels.
