Description

Mount Coonowrin, also called Crookneck, is a 377-metre volcanic plug in the Glass House Mountains of Queensland, Australia. Its bent rock tower is readily recognised from surrounding viewpoints. In the Aboriginal story recorded by the sources, Coonowrin is the child of Tibrogargan and Beerwah. The entire Coonowrin section of the national park has been closed to public access since March 1999 because of falling rocks; the restriction also covers access to the base of the cliffs. Visitors can view the landscape from Glass House Mountains Lookout or walks on neighbouring mountains such as Ngungun without entering the closed Coonowrin area. The linked experiences include views from outside the restricted area and a 1977 ascent republished by a local club; the archive is not current access guidance. The regional tourism guide asks visitors to respect the area’s cultural significance to Kabi Kabi and Jinibara peoples and stay on designated trails and lookouts. Another account shows Coonowrin from Wild Horse Lookout, an alternative panorama outside the closed area.

The Ngungun summit walking track provides views of Tibrogargan, Coonowrin and Beerwah according to the regional tourism guide. This route is on a neighbouring mountain and does not lead into closed Coonowrin land. Stay on designated tracks, respect the area’s cultural significance to Kabi Kabi and Jinibara peoples, and check closure notices before setting out.

Tanjakan ke titik pandang / Uphill viewpoint walk

AdventurePhiles describes a steep climb to the Wild Horse lookout shelter with views of Coonowrin and the Glass House Mountains. This option is on another mountain, not an approach to Coonowrin’s cliffs. The account dates from 2013; check trail conditions and manager notices before visiting.

Climbing Experiences

Five visitor accounts view Coonowrin from outside the restricted area via Ngungun, Glass House Mountains Lookout, Wild Horse Lookout and a roadside viewpoint. A club archive recalls a 1977 ascent before the closure and explains the restriction. That account is history, not present-day climbing guidance; do not enter the Coonowrin section or its cliff base. Facilities described in older accounts may have changed.
