Description

Mount Chilalo is an extinct stratovolcano in the Arsi Mountains of Oromia, Ethiopia, above Asella; Wikidata Q2963571 and Oromia’s government statistical abstract give an elevation of 4,036 m. Wikipedia describes a caldera with its highest point on the southern rim, while the Oromia park manager places Chilalo–Gelema within Arsi National Park. Laura Schickling’s 2014 account follows forest, settlements and volcanic terrain to the upper mountain, returning after roughly 12 hours including time lost on descent. Her estimate of 15–18 miles is not a complete distance record because the tracking device ran out of battery, so it is not used as a standard route distance or GPX. A September 2011 trip cancellation caused by mud and difficulty finding a guide, alongside Asella residents’ reports from 2019 and 2021, supplies historical context without establishing present access. Boccaletti and colleagues’ 1999 geological study describes lava and scoria with sampled rock ages of roughly 1.74–2.31 million years; these do not date the last eruption, and its 4 by 3 km crater dimensions differ from Wikipedia’s 6 km diameter. The party lost its way for about 1–2 hours descending and returned to Abel’s house around 19:30, roughly 12 hours after arriving there that morning. Residents offered overnight shelter while they were still descending. The estimated 15–18 miles comes from a watch record interrupted by battery failure, so it is not a measured trail distance. The segments below follow the story rather than GPS waypoints or official markers. Treat this as historical context and confirm the route and access with a local guide. The 07:30–19:30 interval is measured from Abel’s house, not an official trailhead; the outing also included a settlement stop. The account starts and ends at a house in Asella; its timing is not directly comparable to a vehicle excursion to a geological viewpoint on the rift margin.
