Description

Mount Bwahit (also spelled Buahit or Bachit, ~4,437 m) is one of the highest peaks of the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia's Amhara Region — commonly cited as the country's third-highest mountain. It stands about 16 km west of Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest peak, separated from it by a roughly 1,600 m deep gorge in the Mesheha Valley. For trekkers, Bwahit plays a double role: its summit can be climbed as a half-day acclimatization hike from Chennek camp (~3,620 m), and the Bwahit Pass (~4,200 m) on its flank is the highest crossing on the classic route toward Ras Dashen. The landscape is quintessential Simien highland: afro-alpine moorland, groves of giant lobelia (Lobelia rhynchopetalum) and dramatic escarpments that are home to the walia ibex and the rare Ethiopian wolf. Being at extreme altitude yet without technical difficulty, Bwahit is a favourite acclimatization test-piece before tackling Ras Dashen.

Routes

Chennek → Bwahit Pass → Ambiko (lintasan menuju Ras Dashen)

Berat (hari panjang dengan turunan besar ±1.400 m)
Satu hari trek penuh

The classic Simien trek stage toward Ras Dashen. From Chennek (~3,620 m) climb ~600 m to the Bwahit Pass (~4,200 m) — the route's highest crossing, with views of the Bwahit peak and the Mesheha Valley. Then descend steeply ~1,400 m to the Mesheha River (~2,800 m) through Chiro Leba village, before climbing ~400 m to Ambiko/Ambiquo camp (~3,200 m) — the launch point for the Ras Dashen summit push. The pass-to-river descent is the single steepest drop on the classic Simien route.

Chennek → Puncak Bwahit (pendakian aklimatisasi)

Sedang — jarak pendek tetapi berat karena ketinggian ekstrem
±4 jam pulang-pergi (setengah hari)

An out-and-back climb from Chennek camp (~3,620 m). The path climbs ~600 m through giant-lobelia moorland and afro-alpine grass to the Bwahit Pass (~4,200 m), then continues to the Bwahit summit (~4,437 m). Terrain shifts from grassland to rock and lichen near the top; mist is frequent. The area is among the best for spotting the walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf. Popular as a high acclimatization point before attempting Ras Dashen.

Climbing Experiences

Bwahit is almost always experienced as part of a multi-day Simien Mountains trek. Its two signature moments: climbing the Bwahit summit (~4,437 m) as a half-day acclimatization hike from Chennek camp, and crossing the Bwahit Pass (~4,200 m) — the route's high point — on the way toward Ras Dashen. Along the way trekkers pass giant-lobelia moorland and may spot the walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf. The sources below include Simien trek films and vlogs covering the Chennek/Bwahit section, plus written trip reports detailing the pass and summit.
