Description

Mount Bulusan (1,565 m), also known as Bulusan Volcano, is an active stratovolcano at the southeastern tip of Luzon Island, in Sorsogon Province, Bicol Region, Philippines — about 70 km southeast of Mayon Volcano and roughly 390 km southeast of Manila. It forms the core of Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, a protected area rich in montane rainforest, hot springs, and four lakes including the popular Bulusan and Aguingay lakes. Bulusan is one of the Philippines' most active volcanoes, with a history of sudden phreatic eruptions, so the summit trail is opened and closed according to the Alert Level issued by PHIVOLCS. For hikers, the appeal is the mix of lush primary forest, crater views, and the natural-park ecosystem at its foot; the climb is usually a guided day hike from villages around Irosin and Bulusan.

Access to the summit zone opens and closes per PHIVOLCS alert level; during heightened activity the Permanent Danger Zone is closed.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of Bulusan emphasize two things: the rich rainforest and lakes of Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, and an absolute dependence on the volcano's activity status. Many videos show the climb toward the crater/summit through dense forest and muddy trails, the beauty of Bulusan Lake at the foot, and footage of phreatic eruptions and ashfall that underscore how active it is. Some hikers note climbs made just before closures due to eruptions. The common message: always check PHIVOLCS bulletins, use a local guide, and prepare for wet tropical terrain.
