Description
Mount Buffalo is a granite plateau rising in the Victorian Alps of Australia, about 350 km northeast of Melbourne and near the towns of Bright and Porepunkah. Unlike a single conical mountain, Buffalo is a broad tableland studded with tors — massive granite boulders — its highest point being The Horn at about 1,723 m. The whole area forms Mount Buffalo National Park, one of Victoria's oldest parks, renowned for a variety of easily accessed short walks: a brief climb to The Horn summit with 360-degree views over the Australian Alps and the Buckland Valley, the Cathedral–Hump walk traversing granite slabs past the Cathedral tor, and the Gorge Heritage Walk linking a chain of lookouts along the sheer-walled Gorge near the historic Chalet (built in 1910). The plateau is also one of Australia's oldest and most revered rock-climbing destinations, especially on The Cathedral formation and the Gorge cliffs. Because of its elevation, weather can change quickly year-round — fog and cold can arrive suddenly — and in winter the area is blanketed in snow with the road up to The Horn closed seasonally.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on Mount Buffalo split between relaxed plateau walks and serious rock climbing. Trail vlogs consistently highlight the short climb to The Horn with its 360-degree panorama and exploring the granite-tor 'galleries' on the plateau, while other footage features climbers on The Cathedral formation — one of Australia's most classic granite cliffs. Blog write-ups round up the area's best walks and lookouts, from The Horn and the Cathedral to the Gorge Heritage Walk along the sheer-walled Gorge. Common themes: the distinctive granite landscape, easy trail access, and fast-changing alpine weather.
