Description
Mount Brewster (Māori: Haumaitiketike; 2,516 m) is a Southern Alps peak at the end of the Young Range, in the eastern part of Mount Aspiring National Park on New Zealand's South Island — the tallest mountain within roughly a 20 km radius. Julius von Haast named it after the Scottish physicist David Brewster, and the first ascent was recorded in January 1929 by Samuel Turner, Eric Miller, Charles Bentham and C. Turner. Although the summit is built from Permian–Triassic sedimentary rock (sandstone, siltstone, mudstone), the real draw for walkers is the Brewster Track and Brewster Hut: a short but brutally steep climb gaining about a thousand metres from the Haast River near Fantail Falls (SH6) up to a hut perched at the bushline, facing the Brewster Glacier across the valley. For experienced parties the hut is the springboard to the glacier and the summits of Brewster and nearby Mount Armstrong. Water near the mountain drains into Lakes Wānaka and Hāwea via the Brewster Glacier and Makarora River. The mix of a short route, a punishing climb and glacier views makes it one of Otago's most popular overnight tramps.

Routes
Brewster Hut → Brewster Glacier / puncak Mount Brewster & Mount Armstrong (rute alpine)
Sulit/alpine: butuh keterampilan mendaki gunung — kapak es, crampon, navigasi glasial; hanya untuk yang berpengalamanA continuation from Brewster Hut for experienced parties toward the Brewster Glacier and the true summit of Mount Brewster (2,516 m) or nearby Mount Armstrong. The route leaves the tramping zone for open alpine terrain: rocky ridges, snow, and a crevassed glacier. It demands mountaineering gear and skills plus stable weather. The reward is panoramas of the Brewster Glacier, the Makarora valley and the Southern Alps. Not for ordinary walkers; misjudging the glaciated terrain can be fatal.
Route Segments
- 1
Brewster Hut → punggungan/gletser bawah
Naik punggungan terbuka di atas hut menuju tepi Brewster Glacier
- 2
Gletser → puncak Mount Armstrong / Mount Brewster (2.516 m)
Medan glasial & salju bercelah; wajib kapak es, crampon, dan pengalaman alpine
Brewster Track — Sungai Haast (dekat Fantail Falls, SH6) → Brewster Hut
Menengah: jarak pendek (~2,5 km) tapi sangat curam, ~1.000 m tanjakan; diawali penyeberangan Sungai HaastThe main route to Brewster Hut. From SH6 near Fantail Falls, walkers ford the Haast River (potentially dangerous in flood — judgement required), then face a relentlessly steep climb through mossy, rooty forest. In about 2.5 km the track gains nearly a thousand metres to break through the bushline and reach Brewster Hut (limited capacity, DOC ticket system), which faces the Brewster Glacier across the valley. Short but brutal, it is popular as an overnight tramp, though strong walkers do it as a day trip. Alpine weather changes fast and the upper section is exposed to wind and cold.
Route Segments
- 1
SH6 / Fantail Falls → penyeberangan Sungai Haast
Menyeberang Sungai Haast — nilai debit air; berbahaya saat banjir
- 2
Penyeberangan → Brewster Hut (garis pepohonan)
Tanjakan sangat curam berakar & berlumut, ~1.000 m dalam ~2 km, sampai hut menghadap gletser
Climbing Experiences
The Brewster Track is famous as a short but brutal overnight tramp: a thousand-metre climb from the Haast River to Brewster Hut facing the glacier. The clips below are real hiker experiences — from an official alpine-safety series to vlogs of the climb to the hut and on to the Brewster Glacier and nearby summit.
