Description

Mount Brewster, also called Haumaitiketike (2,516 m), stands at the end of the Young Range in New Zealand’s Mount Aspiring National Park. This Southern Alps peak consists of Permian–Triassic sedimentary rocks and was named for physicist David Brewster; its first ascent was recorded in 1929. The 12-bunk Brewster Hut is a popular approach destination. The hut, glacier and summit are distinct objectives; reaching the hut does not complete a mountain ascent.

Alpine off-track; experienced parties only

DOC confirms there is no track beyond the hut. Alpine navigation is required; avoid rain/cloud. Keep clear of the unstable glacier face and ice caves. This is not a summit route.

Cross the Haast only when safe, then climb through forest to the hut. Avoid forecast rain: the river may block your return.
