Description
Mount Bogong (1,986 m) is the highest peak in Victoria, Australia, and the second-highest summit on the Australian mainland after Mount Kosciuszko. Situated within Alpine National Park in the Victorian High Country, it forms part of the Victorian Alps along the Great Dividing Range. Its name comes from an Aboriginal word linked to the Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa), a vital food source for Indigenous Australians who seasonally trekked to the high country to harvest the insects — a tradition spanning thousands of years. The summit is reached via three main routes from around Mountain Creek Campground: Staircase Spur (the most popular, climbing 1,300 m in 8 km through open, steep terrain), Eskdale Spur (a direct southern approach equally demanding), and a shorter option from the Granite Flat 4WD track end. A circuit combining Staircase Spur ascent and Eskdale Spur descent is favoured by experienced hikers. From the broad summit marked by a large cairn, views can extend to Mount Kosciuszko on clear days. Alpine weather in Victoria can shift dramatically at any time of year; warm and waterproof layers are essential.

Routes
Lingkar Staircase Spur – Eskdale Spur (rute lingkar)
Climbing Experiences
Climbing Mount Bogong is typically a strenuous day hike from Mountain Creek Campground near Mount Beauty: ascending via Staircase Spur (8 km, 1,300 m of gain, steep and exposed) and descending via Eskdale Spur in a circuit, or vice versa. A shorter option is available via the Granite Flat 4WD track. Trip reports emphasise the Staircase living up to its name — a series of steep, relentless climbs with minimal shade. The broad summit with its large cairn delivers 360° views reaching Mount Kosciuszko on clear days. Weather must be checked as conditions can shift dramatically; warm and rain gear are always required.
