Information
- Elevation
- 1.567 m
- Country
- Australia (AU)
- Location / Range
- Baw Baw Plateau, Baw Baw National Park & Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort, Gippsland, Victoria
- Mountain type
- Titik tertinggi sebuah dataran tinggi granodiorit (pluton Devon akhir) — bukan gunung berapi
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- -37.8333, 146.2667
- Difficulty
- Sangat lentur, tergantung jalur. Summit Circuit dari desa alpine cuma 3,5 km, grade 3 (moderat) versi Trail Hiking Australia, total naik ±141 m dari 1.455 m ke 1.573 m, sekitar 1,5 jam. Loop "3 Peaks" yang menyambungkan Mount Baw Baw, Mount Saint Phillack, dan Mount Saint Gwinear panjangnya 15,5 km, grade 3, naik ±527 m, sekitar 6 jam. Yang paling berat adalah pendekatan multi-hari dari Walhalla lewat Great Walhalla Alpine Trail / Australian Alps Walking Track, atau traverse plateau 33,5 km dua hari sampai reruntuhan Talbot Hut.
- Best Season
Laporan jalur mutakhir menyebut sekitar 1,5 km bentang Baragwanath Flat sempat ditumbuhi semak lebat sampai sulit dilewati, dengan saran memakai rute utara lewat National Park Junction.
Description
Mount Baw Baw (1,567 m) sits in Gippsland, about 120 km east of Melbourne and 50 km north of the Latrobe Valley. It is the high point of the Baw Baw Plateau. The name comes from the Yarra-Yallou and Gunna-Kurnai people of Gippsland; its meaning is uncertain, with "echo" or "ghost" suggested. Geologically the plateau is a late Devonian granodiorite pluton. That rock is why the summit is not a spire but a broad rolling tableland — a shape that dictates how people walk here: not up one ridge, but across the plateau from one low summit to the next. Above about 1,200 m the vegetation is snow gum woodland; the valleys below hold cool temperate rainforest. The climate is subpolar oceanic, with heavy snow from May to October and more annual precipitation than almost anywhere on mainland Australia. On the northern slope stands the Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort — a small alpine village with lodging, ski hire, food outlets, a medical centre and an information centre, all within walking distance of the car parks. The mountain therefore serves two seasons: skiing and snow play in winter, walking and cycling in the green season. For walkers the core route is the 3.5 km Summit Circuit, which leaves the Village Restaurant and links the Village Trail, Summit Trail, Maltese Trail and Muellers Trail through snow gum forest to the top. Those wanting more take the 15.5 km 3 Peaks loop out to Mount Saint Phillack (1,556 m) and Mount Saint Gwinear (1,509 m), partly on the Australian Alps Walking Track and McMillans Trail. For an overnight, parties traverse the plateau toward the Talbot Hut ruins — roughly 33.5 km over two days, past Mushroom Rocks, boardwalks over sphagnum bog, and the brick and stone chimneys left from old huts. Cyclists know the road to the resort as one of the toughest sealed climbs in Australia, averaging around 11.5%.

Routes
3 Peaks Loop: Baw Baw – Saint Phillack – Saint Gwinear
Grade 3 (moderat)A long loop from Carpark No 1 in Baw Baw Village linking three plateau summits: Mount Baw Baw (1,564 m), Mount Saint Phillack (1,556 m) and Mount Saint Gwinear (1,509 m). It uses the Baw Baw Village Trail, La Trobe Trail, Summit Trail, McMillans Trail, a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track, and Mueller's Track. The character is typically plateau: small rises and drops between snow gums and alpine heath rather than one big climb. Recent trail notes report that a 1.5 km stretch across Baragwanath Flat has become overgrown and hard to follow — the alternative is the northern route via National Park Junction.
Route Segments
- 1
Carpark No 1 → puncak Mount Baw Baw
Lewat Baw Baw Village Trail dan Summit Trail.
- 2
Mount Baw Baw → Mount Saint Phillack
Menyusuri ruas Australian Alps Walking Track di atas plateau; pandangan ke timur menuju Thompson Reservoir.
- 3
Mount Saint Phillack → Mount Saint Gwinear
- 4
Mount Saint Gwinear → desa via McMillans Trail & Mueller's Track
Ruas Baragwanath Flat (±1,5 km) bisa sangat rimbun; pertimbangkan rute utara lewat National Park Junction.
Summit Circuit dari Baw Baw Alpine Village
Grade 3 (moderat) — medan tak rata dan tanjakan tetap, butuh kebugaran wajarThe mountain's core and most-walked route. It starts and finishes at the Village Restaurant in Baw Baw Alpine Village, linking the Village Trail, Summit Trail, Maltese Trail and Muellers Trail. The altitude band is narrow — about 1,455 m to 1,573 m — so total ascent is only around 141 m. The track climbs through snow gum forest to the 1,564 m summit and descends back to the village. Trail Hiking Australia advises walking it outside winter only, since some sections cross ski runs.
Route Segments
- 1
Village Restaurant → Summit Trail
Lewat Village Trail dari pusat desa; fasilitas (penginapan, warung, pusat medis, pusat informasi) semuanya dalam jarak jalan kaki dari tempat parkir.
- 2
Summit Trail → puncak Mount Baw Baw
Menanjak menembus hutan snow gum. Pandangan lepas ke lembah-lembah Gippsland, meski tajuk snow gum sering menutup panorama tepat di puncak.
- 3
Puncak → Maltese Trail → Muellers Trail → desa
Traverse plateau: Baw Baw Village → reruntuhan Talbot Hut (bermalam)
Berat karena jarak dan kemandirian, bukan karena teknis — perlu navigasi dan perlengkapan kemah alpineAn overnight traverse of the Baw Baw Plateau from Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort to the Talbot Hut ruins, with optional detours to Mushroom Rocks and Mount Saint Gwinear. The route crosses wide alpine heath fields, snow gum forest, and protective boardwalks over sphagnum moss bogs. Of the old huts only chimneys remain: Talbot Hut's brick chimney and Whitelaw Hut's stone one. Reliable streams run near Talbot Hut, but all water should be boiled or filtered; open fires are prohibited, so a fuel stove is essential.
Route Segments
- 1
Baw Baw Alpine Resort → Mount Saint Phillack (via Australian Alps Walking Track)
- 2
Mount Saint Phillack → reruntuhan Talbot Hut
Kemah bermalam.
- 3
Sisipan opsional: Mushroom Rocks & Mount Saint Gwinear
Climbing Experiences
What people experience on Mount Baw Baw is decided by where they start. Those setting out from the alpine village get a friendly mountain — the 3.5 km Summit Circuit, only about 141 m of climbing, done in 1.5 hours, with snow gums either side and open views over Gippsland. Those starting from Walhalla get an entirely different mountain: a multi-day, forty-odd kilometre alpine route along the Great Walhalla Alpine Trail. In between are parties traversing the plateau to the Talbot Hut ruins, roughly 33.5 km over two days, past Mushroom Rocks and boardwalks over sphagnum bog. The thread running through every account: the plateau is flat and densely wooded so summit views are often screened by snow gums, the weather can turn at any time in a place that gets more rain than almost anywhere on mainland Australia, and walking here in winter is a poor idea because some trails cross active ski runs.
