Description

Mount Bandai (磐梯山, Bandai-san, 1,819 m) is an active stratovolcano in Fukushima Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan, and one of the '100 Famous Mountains of Japan'. It is remembered for the massive 1888 lateral (debris-avalanche) eruption that collapsed its northern flank, killed about 477 people, and dammed rivers to create the colorful Goshiki-numa lakes and the 'Ura-Bandai' (back-Bandai) landscape. Seen from the south, its graceful cone rises above Lake Inawashiro—Japan's fourth-largest lake—earning it the nickname 'Aizu Fuji'. The most popular ascent begins at the Happodai trailhead, climbing through beech forest past the 1888 crater to a summit with sweeping views of the lake and the Aizu ranges. Set within Bandai-Asahi National Park, it is a favorite day hike throughout the snow-free season and is famous for autumn foliage. Its volcanic activity is monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program.

Routes

Jalur Happodai (八方台) — rute klasik

Menengah (paling mudah & populer)
±4–5 jam pulang-pergi

Jalur sisi selatan (Omotebandai / Inawashiro)

Menengah–menantang (tanjakan lebih panjang)
±6–8 jam pulang-pergi

Climbing Experiences

Mount Bandai is one of Tohoku's most beginner-friendly '100 Famous Mountains' day hikes. Most documented climbs start at the Happodai trailhead — the easiest and most popular route — winding through beech forest, past the 1888 eruption crater, to a summit overlooking Lake Inawashiro. Japanese-language recordings highlight family and couple hikes, while English creators frame the peak within the Nihon Hyakumeizan list. Some videos climb in autumn for the foliage and in winter from the Ura-Bandai side.
