Description
Mount Banahaw (Bundok Banahaw, 2,170 m) is a dormant active volcanic complex rising on the border of Laguna and Quezon provinces on Luzon Island, the Philippines, and the highest peak in the Calabarzon region. It is regarded as a holy mountain by various folk-religious groups; thousands of pilgrims visit its springs, caves, and sacred 'puwesto' shrines, especially during Holy Week. Banahaw forms a massif with Mount San Cristobal, both protected within the Mounts Banahaw–San Cristobal Protected Landscape. Its summit is a caldera with a jagged rim—viewpoints such as Durungawan are goals for hikers. Because of environmental damage from mass visitation, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) closed the trails for ecological rehabilitation from 2004, and access remains tightly regulated. Ascents cross dense, humid forest, muddy trails, and foggy weather, making it a moderate-to-hard challenge that demands preparation and permits.

Routes
Jalur Santa Lucia (mata air keramat)
SourceTraverse Kinabuhayan → Durungawan (via Cristalino)
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Mount Banahaw blends natural challenge with a spiritual dimension. The classic route crosses Kinabuhayan and Santa Lucia to sacred caves and springs, then pushes through dense forest to the caldera rim and the Durungawan viewpoints. Because it is a holy mountain and a tightly regulated protected area (fully closed since 2004), some documentation stresses pilgrimage and conservation. Vlogs show muddy trails, thick fog, Cristalino falls, and the risk of getting lost—underscoring the need for guides, permits, and thorough preparation.
