Description
Mount Ayanganna is a sandstone tepui in the Pakaraima Mountains of western Guyana. Wikidata Q2395928 records 2,042 m and coordinates 5.383333° N, 59.983333° W; Wikipedia gives approximately 2,040–2,041 m. Its forested slopes and stepped plateaus belong to the Guiana Shield. Documented ascents include Guyana Defence Force flag-raising patrols and civilian botanical expeditions. Dennis Stewart recalled the 1966 journey through Kamarang, while Smithsonian publications describe a western route through Chinowieng with field camps and a 2001 eastern approach via the Potaro River. These scientific accounts record historical expeditions; they do not establish that a maintained tourist trail or present-day access is available.
Routes
Kamarang — ekspedisi 1966
Ekspedisi historis / Historical expeditionDennis Stewart describes an Ogle–Kamarang flight followed by seven walking days to the summit and six back. His account includes a flooded-stream crossing. These timings belong to the 1966 team; the source provides neither a GPS track nor a current itinerary.
SourcePendekatan barat — Imbaimadai, Chi-Chi, Chinowieng
Ekspedisi botani historis / Historical botanical expeditionHenkel and Hoffman describe boat travel from Imbaimadai to Chi-Chi Falls, then walking to Chinowieng. The approach continues through camps on the Koatse River, at the mountain foot and on the northeastern plateau before the summit section. Smithsonian publishes camp names and terrain descriptions; this historical record does not guarantee a maintained trail today.
SourcePendekatan timur — Sungai Potaro (2001)
Pembukaan jalur ekspedisi / Expedition trail cuttingClarke’s team entered the eastern side from Ayanganna airstrip and the Potaro River. Their line crossed four escarpments and met a western trail near the summit section. The expedition ran from 30 May to 10 July 2001, including research, logistics and weather delays; this is not a recommended trekking duration.
SourceClimbing Experiences
These six sources cover military testimony, video documentation and a civilian botanical expedition. The Smithsonian account of the 2001 eastern approach adds camp, flooding and logistics details absent from flag-raising announcements. These historical records do not establish current access conditions or tourist walking times.
