Description
Mount Asama (浅間山, Asama-yama, 2,568 m) is a complex stratovolcano straddling the border of Gunma and Nagano prefectures on Honshu, and one of the '100 Famous Mountains of Japan'. It is among Honshu's most active volcanoes; the 1783 Tenmei eruption devastated villages and left the Onioshidashi lava field, now a geological tourist site. Because the summit crater (Kama-yama) is dangerous and closed, hikers are directed to the secondary peak Maekakeyama (about 2,524 m) on the outer caldera rim—the highest permitted point when the volcanic alert sits at Level 1. The classic route starts from Asamayama-so (Jinba trailhead), passing a volcanic shelter hut before climbing a gravelly ridge to the crater rim, revealing the gaping caldera, the Karuizawa highlands, and the Japanese Alps. Trail access opens or closes according to Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) alert levels; climbers must check the current status before setting out.

Routes
Loop Kurofu-yama & Tomi (Kurumazaka Pass / Takamine)
SourceMaekakeyama via Asamayama-so (Jinba)
SourceClimbing Experiences
Because Asama's summit crater (Kama-yama) is dangerous and closed, nearly all documented climbs target Maekakeyama (前掛山, about 2,524 m) on the outer caldera rim — the highest permitted point at alert Level 1. The common route leaves from Asamayama-so (Jinba trailhead), passes a volcanic shelter hut, then follows a gravelly ridge to the crater rim. Japanese-language recordings emphasize the trail reopening after alert downgrades, the barren moonscape terrain, and views into the gaping caldera; some film in winter. English content introduces Asama as one of Japan's most active volcanoes and a '100 Famous Mountain'.
