Description
Mount Alvernia (63 m), originally named Como Hill, is the highest point of the entire Bahamas and sits on Cat Island. Though only a small hill, it is famous for The Hermitage crowning its top — a tiny stone monastery designed and hand-built in the 1930s by Monsignor John Hawes (Fra Jerome), an English architect-turned-priest. The name Alvernia comes from La Verna in Tuscany, where Saint Francis of Assisi received the stigmata. Visitors follow a rocky path lined with Stations of the Cross to the summit, where the medieval-style hermitage stands with its little tower. The top opens views of Cat Island and the Atlantic. As the country's high point, Mount Alvernia is a popular geographic pilgrimage for travellers and highpointers.
